Xiaomi: configure battery saver

The smartphone operating system manages the priorities on its own and optimizes the use of the battery according to the needs of the installed applications. Through its MIUI overlay based on Android OS, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is no exception and pauses the network connectivity of games and software when the screen is off. This watch concerns Wifi, the 3G / 4G mobile network and GPS location. Bluetooth does not seem to be impacted since it is still possible to stream music to wireless speakers, even when the screen is off. But some apps need to keep using the GPS signal even when it’s in the background, for example to record sports activities (Strava, Endomondo), use Orange voice mail, etc. It is thus necessary configure automatic battery saver to better manage applications installed on a Xiaomi smartphone or tablet.

Without this, sports GPS tracking will yield nothing (Runtastic, Nike+, Endomondo, Strava, Runkeeper): the time will scroll but the GPS track will be non-existent, the coordinates will only be retrieved when the screen is on. Similarly, to synchronize a sports watch (GarminSuunto, etc.), it is necessary to exit the application concerned from the “energy saving” mode applied by default by Xiami, despite the transmission by Bluetooth which is not configured to reduce data exchange consumption.

Maybe also that dating applications that use geolocation in the background (Tinder, Happn, Meetic…) also need to be taken out of energy saving mode in order to find a potential partner even when the screen is smartphone is on standby.

The example was carried out on a Xiaomi Mi6 which runs Android 7.1.1 with MIUI 9.0 but this concerns other mobiles in the Mi range (including the Note and Max) and Redmi as well as the MiPad tablets.
