Windows 10: set a fixed IP address

This is one of the new features of Windows 10 update 1903 (May 2019 Update), assigning a fixed IP address is now much easier. Almost five years after the commercial release of Windows 10, Microsoft has finally thought about network administrators and users who need to set up a fixed IP on their computer. Usually assigned to a wired Ethernet network card, the fixed IP address allows you to always be connected to a network with the same address and to define specific parameters (gateway, DNS, etc.).

Before Windows 10 version 1903, you had to go to Settings, Network and Internet, Ethernet. Then click on “Network and Sharing Center” or on “Modify adapter options” to access the old Windows 7-style Control Panel interface. The procedure is detailed here. This method is now obsolete on computers with Windows 10 updated in 2019, 2020 and later. Please note, an important parameter has been modified, explanations below.

This tutorial explains how configure a fixed IP address with Windows 10 1903 and later (1909, etc). If this guide shows an example with an Ethernet network card (RJ45 network cable on a LAN), the procedure is also valid with a wireless Wi-Fi (WLAN) card.
