Windows 10 (1703): join a local domain

We had already seen how to join a domain from a Windows 10 workstation, but the April 2017 Creators Update changed the interface for accessing the menus. Here is the new procedure for put a Windows 10 Pro version Creators Update (1703) on an Active Directory domain.

This tutorial shows how join a local Active Directory domainunlike Azure Active Directory domains which contact a server by clouds and not in the LAN local network.

“AD” here means Active Directory, the directory service to manage your Windows domain. Note also that Windows 10 Family cannot join an AD / LDAP domain, this is one of the few differences between W10 Family and Pro.

If the computer in question is equipped with Windows 10 version Fall Creators Update (1709) or higher, it will be necessary follow this new tutorial since the method has changed.

Join a local domain with Windows 10 Creators Update

1. Make a right click on start menu and choose System.

2. Under the Windows 10 logo is displayed the name of the computer and the organization (by default the workgroup WORKGROUP). Click on the line ” Sign in to Work or School (not very French as a sentence):

3. On the “Professional or School Access” screen, click on the ” Connect » :

4. A window opens with the option to identify yourself with your email account. In the case of a local AD domain, click on the alternative action at the bottom of the screen, ” Join this device to an on-premises Active Directory domain » :

5. Indicate the domain name to join and click on Following.

6. Authenticate with a Domain Administrator account or a user login authorized to add stations on the network.

7. Indicate the user’s AD account who will use this computer and specify the type of rights to assign to it: Standard User (limited) or Administrator (full control of the machine).

8. Restart now so that the PC becomes a member of the network and the user session is already prepared.

9. At the next start, the login window is already filled with the login entered earlier (DOMAINE\Julien in our example).

Alternate method to join a domain with Windows 10 Creators Update

There is an alternative way to join an Active Directory domain with a Windows 10 Creators Update (1703) computer. This method is similar to Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP. And Windows 10 older versions.

1. Press the keys WINDOWS + PAUSE to open System properties (unfortunately, the Pause key is missing from laptop keyboards).

2. On the Computer Name tab, click ” To modify » :

3. Click on “ Modify the parameters next to Computer name and Workgroup:

4. Click on “Member of a Domain » and indicate the domain name to join. Validate by okay then fill in an AD administrator account or user authorized to join members to the domain.

5. To restart the computer to log on to the AD/LDAP domain.
