Why Wsappx is causing high CPU usage and how to fix it

If your computer is slow, one way to investigate the cause of the problem is to check the task manager. While the task manager shows running processes that might be consuming all the resources, it doesn’t necessarily explain what each one of them means.

Wsappx is one of those uncommon services that you will see in the task manager. However, although you can see the wsappx process, it’s not entirely clear what it’s doing. And why is it taking up a lot of CPU and disk resources?

In this article, you will learn why wsappx is causing high CPU usage and how to fix it.

What is the wsappx process?

Wsappx is a legitimate Windows service that is well known for causing high disk and CPU usage. The service, which deals with the Microsoft Store (formerly Windows Store) and the global app system, is running all the time. However, the amount of resources you consume can be minimal or significantly increased depending on what you do.

For example, if you are installing an app from the Microsoft Store or a desktop app from outside the Store, the wsappx process will use more CPU or disk resources. The same thing happens when you launch, update, or delete an app.

Why Wsappx is causing high CPU usage

In Windows 10, the wsappx process includes sub-processes known as Client License Service or ClipSVC, and AppX Deployment Service or AppXSVC.

ClipSVC handles licensing and protects against hacking of Store apps while AppXSVC publishes apps so that they run any time you install, update, or delete one. Thus, if you disable any of these services, the Store apps will not work.

When child processes are active and running, you will see an increase in wsappx process usage. While wsappx is a vital system process, it doesn’t need to be enabled all the time. They are only required when you want to install, update, or delete Store apps.

note: If you’re using the Microsoft Store app and get a license error message, you’ll need to enable ClipSVC and AppXSVC services.

What to do when Wsappx is causing high CPU usage

When you see that wsappx is using a lot of CPU, there are several fixes to solve the problem.

Run a virus scan

If your computer has a virus or malware, it may cause high usage rates in various Windows processes. The same is true if any apps downloaded from outside the Store or Microsoft Store apps are infected. Running a virus or malware scan will help you rule out the possibility that these threats are causing the high CPU usage on your computer.

Windows Update

If the Microsoft Store won’t open or there is a problem with the app, check if there are pending Windows updates and install them.

To check for Windows updates, select قائمة ابدأ -> الإعدادات -> التحديث والأمان.

Uninstall recently installed apps

Sometimes high CPU usage can be due to an app you installed recently. In this case, uninstall the application and restart your computer. If that fixes the high CPU usage issue, try reinstalling the app and see if the issue persists.

To uninstall an app, open Control Panel and select Software.

Allocate more virtual memory

Increasing your computer’s virtual memory may help reduce high CPU usage.

To do this, right-click قائمة ابدأ -> البحث and type Performance in the search box. Locate Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.

If you know how much RAM your device has, set it as the initial size (in megabytes) and set the maximum size as twice the size of the RAM. Locate تعيين -> موافق and restart the computer.

Disable Microsoft Store

You can disable the Microsoft Store using the Group Policy Editor or the Registry Editor.

To disable Microsoft Store using Group Policy Editor, enter gpedit.msc in the search box and press Enter Opens the group policy editor.

Create a new DWORD value in the Windows Store key and name it RemoveWindowsStore. write 1 in the value field. Reboot your computer and check if the CPU usage of wsappx is minimal.

note: Disabling the Windows Store is not recommended if you need frequent automatic updates for apps like Photos, Calculator, Mail, Films & TV, and OneNote. Additionally, you cannot install or update third-party Windows Store apps when they are disabled.

Disable automatic app updates

Another way to reduce wsappx’s high CPU usage is to disable automatic updates for Store apps to prevent them from updating without your participation.

To do this, type Store in the search box and select Microsoft Store to open it.

Click the menu in the upper right side of the store window and select Settings.

note: Remember checking for updates manually is not easy for most users. Additionally, apps are a major part of Windows 10, so unless automatic updates are causing your system to get stuck, we don’t recommend disabling them.

Remove Bloatware and stop apps running in the background

Bloatware and background apps tend to run when you don’t want them to, thus increasing your computer’s CPU usage. Removing bloatware ensures that the update does not continue to run in the background and consume resources.

To remove any pre-installed app, select قائمة ابدأ -> الإعدادات -> التطبيقات -> التطبيقات والميزات To see all the applications installed on your computer. You can uninstall any app that you are not using including pre-installed junk and other unwanted apps.

Disabling background apps from running means that the app can’t check for new notifications when it’s not in use. You can disable background apps that you never use or toggle the slider to completely disable all background apps.

Other fixes to try

  • Change the AppXSVC value in the registry. You can do this in the registry editor. Move to the next key and change the start value to 4.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ServicesAppXSvc
  • Perform a clean boot to make Windows only run the necessary startup applications and a few basic driver combinations so you can check if the high CPU usage is caused by the startup applications.

CPU load management

If you are using Microsoft Store or if apps are updating in the background, you may encounter high CPU usage by wsappx on your PC, albeit temporarily. Try the above solutions and see if wsappx usage returns to normal levels. Also check out why Dwm.exe is causing high CPU usage and how to fix it.
