I have already spoken of Veeam Agent software which allows back up your computer for free and easily.
Did you know that Veeam Backup For Microsoft Office 365 also allows you to back up your Microsoft Office 365 data for free ?
With the rise of teleworking, there is no doubt that Microsoft’s collaborative suite is enjoying significant success. Teams is a great tool but files and conversations should be backed up !
Here is a complete tutorial on Veeam Backup For Microsoft Office 365.
Why back up your Microsoft Office 365 data?
When you store data at Microsoft (OneDrive / Mails Exchange Online) they are in no way saved.
Indeed Microsoft guarantees you a quality of service (99.9% availability) but does not guarantee your data.
For Microsoft it isuser who is responsible for his data because they belong to him.
There is indeed the recycle bin system but you have 30 days to restore your data and it does not protect you from Ransomware.
In addition, in the event of a dispute the backup protects you from voluntary deletion company data.
This is why Veeam has developed a tool called Veeam Backup For Microsoft Office 365
Veeam Backup For Microsoft Office 365 backup tool
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is available for free. However there are some constraints on this free version. To know :

But otherwise you have access to all the features!
The tool allows you to save:

To get the tool you have to download it on the Veeam website (a Veeam account is required you can create one for free in a matter of minutes.)
We offer you the latest version 5 of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365.
Once downloaded you must unzip the archive then proceed with the installation on your server or pc.
No need for a license, if you don’t provide it you are automatically on the free version.
You must unzip the downloaded file, inside you will have 4 executables:
Start by installing the engine and then the explorers. Nothing special for the installation, do next, next.
Once installed, you must open the Veeam Backup Office 365 application.
It is strongly recommended to install Veeam Backup For Microsoft Office 365 independently of Veeam Backup and Replication, in other words do not mix the products on the same machine!
Add your organization
At the first opening, you are asked if you wish to enter a license. Make “NO” to benefit from the free version.
You must then add an organization (or Tenant)
You are then offered to choose the services to save.
Then we configure the authentication method, I recommend the modern authentication method which is more reliable and more secure.
You must name your Application and create a self-signed certificate by clicking on Install
Leave the default name then click Finish:
Then do Next, a window with a code will appear to validate the configuration with Azure.
Once validated, do Next to finalize the configuration of your Organization.
Click Finish to complete the addition of your organization.
Now we need to create storage space for the backup.
Creation of the Repository
To create a storage space called Backup Repository you must click on the Backup Infrastructure tab then Backup Repository
You must define a folder for the backup.
Then you need to set up retention.
Veeam offers two types of retention: “Item-Level retention” and “Snapshot-Based retention”
Item-Level Retention allows saving only the data corresponding to the duration of the retention. Over time Veeam will delete data that is older than the retention period.
Snapshot-Based Retention offers to back up data by restore point. You will therefore have restore points every day until you reach the retention period. This solution consumes more storage and is used little.
Creating the backup job
Your organization is set up and we now have space to hold the backup. So you have to choose what to save. This is the purpose of the backup job.
To create your job you need click on your organization then backup.
Now choose the objects to save. You can directly back up your entire organization or choose Teams users, groups, teams.
You must define the Repository that will store your backup
Finally we will choose the job schedule.
Restoring Microsoft Office 365 Data
You can restore your data from the last backup point or from the oldest ones (depending on the retention you set).
Need to restore a sharepoint library? emails ? or your Teams conversations? no problem the tool offers an explorer that is very easy to learn.
To restore you must right-click on the job then choose what you want to restore:
You can browse other save points you have to choose the “point-in-time state”.
Depending on the service to be restored, the corresponding explorer starts.
Another example for messaging.
