Unemployment Benefits in Washington State

Unemployment benefits provide you with temporary income when you lose your job through no fault of your own. The money partially replaces the wages he lost and helps pay his bills while he finds another job. This benefit comes from the taxes paid by the employer you worked for and does not depend on the money you need. While receiving this benefit, it is your duty to return to work as soon as possible.

How to apply for unemployment benefits

The best and fastest way is to submit your application online. You can order them by phone, but wait times are very long due to COVID-19. At this time, it is not possible to apply in person. Step 1: Eligibility

If you are not working and are not sure if you qualify for unemployment insurance, see the eligibility review for information about your possible eligibility.

If you were laid off for reasons related to COVID-19, you are most likely eligible for regular unemployment benefits.
If after looking at the list of requirements you’re still not sure, submit your application anyway. Fill it out to the best of your ability and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Step 2: Application

Many calls are being received. If possible, please apply online to save time and get your help sooner. Before you start your online application, get the required documents.

When making your request, the system closes after 15 minutes for security. You can apply any day at any time. We suggest you use a laptop or desktop computer, not a tablet or mobile phone. APPLY ONLINE NOW.

Step 3: After the request

After you file your weekly claim, you’ll be notified if your application is approved, how much money you can receive, and what you need to do. We will also notify you if it is not approved.

Have your regular unemployment benefits ended? The federal CARES Act can help you. After April 18, when you see the “PEUC claim” notice in eServices, click there and fill out the application. If you qualify, your benefits will be extended for an additional 13 weeks.

Step 4: Look for another job (optional)

Typically, people receiving unemployment benefits are required to look for work and document their search. Job search requirements are currently optional until the Pandemic State of Emergency is lifted. You can answer “no” to the work search questions on your weekly claim.

Many employers are still hiring, even now, so we encourage anyone who has lost their job to keep looking.

Step 5: Weekly Claim

After you file your claim for unemployment benefits, as soon as that week is over you must file a claim each week. The weekly claim covers the previous week. For unemployment insurance purposes, a week is counted from Sunday to Saturday. You can only claim a week’s pay until the week is finished.

After five weeks or more have passed without filing claims, you can reactivate your claim. And you can easily do it online.

If it has been less than five weeks, you do not need to reactivate your claim. Please continue to file your weekly claims starting with the last week that passed. If you worked during any of those weeks, you must report the hours you worked and your wages on your weekly claims. A portion of your pay will be deducted from your benefits for the time you worked. If you do not want to claim for all the weeks that have passed, you will need to speak with a claim center representative.

To reactivate your claim online through eServices, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to eServices.
  2. Go to your active claim by clicking “Manage My Active Claim” (top of image 1).
  3. You will then be able to click on “Manage My Active Claim” (bottom of image 1).
  4. Under the “I need” column, click on “Reactivate my claim” (image 2).
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish reactivating your claim.
