Every six months, Microsoft is rolling out a new feature update which automatically installs on all Windows 10 PCs via Windows Update. A feature update is a new version of Windows 10 which installs on your PC through an update process.

Delay updates on Windows 10

Important: valid for Windows 10 Family (version 1903 and above), Windows 10 Professional, Windows 10 Business and Windows 10 Education.

If you don’t want Windows 10 to download and install updates on your PC, the Settings app offers two options to suspend updates for several hours or several days:

Pause updates

Note: this option allows to suspend all updates (quality and functionality) for 35 days.

  1. Open them Advanced options from Windows Update:
    • Via the Run command : ms-settings:windowsupdate-options.
    • Via the app Settings > Update and Security> Windows Update> Advanced options.
  2. Activate the switch under Pause updates.
  3. Choose the dated where Windows will resume installing updates.
  4. Updates are now paused until the date you set.
  5. To resume installing updates before the date set, click the button Resume Updates.
Trick : you can also click the button Pause updates for 7 days to pause updates for 7 days. After the break, Windows Update will immediately check for and install updates. This suspension is renewable five times for a total of 35 days, on all editions of Windows 10.

Congratulation ! Your computer will no longer download quality updates (security and reliability updates) or feature updates until 35 days after activating the option.

Post-installation: restart later

Note: this option allows you to delay the installation of updates up to 7 days.

For postpone installing updates on Windows 10 (option only available when updates are pending installation on your computer):

  1. Open the page Windows Update :
    • Via the Run command : ms-settings:windowsupdate.
    • Via the app Settings > Update and security> Windows Update.
  2. Next to the button To restart, click on the link Schedule reboot.
  3. Activate the switch under Schedule an hour.
  4. Indicate the hour and the day that you want the computer to restart automatically to complete the update installation (up to 7 days later).

Congratulation ! Windows 10 will not automatically restart your computer to install updates until the day you specified, allowing you to continue working without interruption up to 7 days.

Defer updates on Windows 10

Important: only valid for Windows 10 Professional, Windows 10 Business and Windows 10 Education.

Note: this option allows you to defer the installation of feature updates up to 16 months and that of quality updates up to 30 days.

  • defer the installation of the next update of functionality up to 16 months thanks to the Semi-annual Canal.
  • defer the installation of updates quality up to 30 days.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open them Advanced options from Windows Update:
    • Via the Run command : ms-settings:windowsupdate-options.
    • Via the app Settings > Update and Security> Windows Update> Advanced options.
  2. Under Choose when to install updates, select the duration during which the next feature update will be suspended:
    • Semi-annual channel (targeted) : allows to defer the new version of Windows 10 up to 365 days after its original publication date.
    • Semi-annual canal : allows the new version of Windows 10 to be deferred for up to 12 months after its release to organizations (it is generally released 4 months after its release on the Semi-Annual Channel (targeted)). In total, the new version of Windows 10 may be postponed up to 16 months (12 + 4 months).
  3. Use the drop-down menu to set the number of days during which you wish to defer the feature updates. You also have the option of postponing the quality updates (cumulative updates including bug and security fixes).

Congratulation ! Windows 10 updates will be downloaded and installed on your computer only after the end of the postponement program that you have defined.

Block updates on Windows 10

If you want to block downloading and installing updates on Windows 10, you can set your internet connection as limited. Only updates judged reviews and necessary for the proper functioning of Windows will be downloaded and installed.
