Slide your device into place to check if the points are positioned appropriately, then adjust them manually as necessary if you need to do so.

LiDAR Scanner Features

Apple enhanced the Measure app with the LiDAR-equipped scanner. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is an added capability to the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPad Pro (2020). Check out what is LiDAR technology and how does it work?

It’s the black dot about the size of the flash on the back of the device.

Also used by self-driving cars, drones, robots and professional photographers, LiDAR sends and receives light pulses to measure distances. Uses travel time to measure depth and distance between the camera and its close surroundings (up to about 5 feet).

Not only does this feature improve the speed and focus of iPhone cameras, but it has greatly enhanced the features of the Measure app. The measurements are more accurate and the app is faster to use.

LiDAR-equipped devices have additional features in the Measure app, including Ruler Width, measurements, the ability to measure a person’s height, and a measurement log.

How to measure someone’s height

To measure a person’s height with a LiDAR scanner:

  • Open the Measure app on your iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, or iPad Pro.
  • Keep the person within the viewfinder of the camera and make sure their entire body is visible.
  • Wait until a line appears above the person’s head indicating the height measurement.
  • Press the “Shutter” button Detailed guide on how to use the application "measurement" From Apple - iOS iPadOS To take a picture of a person’s height.
  • Click It was completed Once finished. Choose between Save to Images or Save to Files.

Move to a well-lit location, avoid dark backgrounds and reflective surfaces, and make sure the person’s face is easy to detect to get an accurate measurement. The measurement will start immediately as soon as someone is detected. You can use it to measure a person sitting or standing.

If your device can’t detect the person, try stepping back a bit. You will also see prompts on the screen to move away or get close.

If you want to repeat the measurement, just focus the device somewhere else to re-measure.

ruler width

Aside from the usual measurement features, devices with LiDAR also have a “rule view” that can be accessed when a measurement is zoomed in.

You simply need to move your device close to the measurement to see the ruler overlay over the line measurement, where the object dimension can be seen in minute increments. Move the iPad Pro close to a line measurement until the width of the ruler appears, then press the shutter button to take a photo, so you can use the increment to plan projects.

Using Edge Guides and Vertical Guides

LiDAR-equipped devices will display additional vertical and horizontal guides while measuring objects. The sensor detects edges and displays clues to help you measure them.

Anywhere in the manual to start the measurement. This feature makes measuring things much easier than manually tapping and moving your device.

record measurements

Aside from the guides and ruler view, you can also access previous measurements and screenshots you took during this measurement session by clicking on the ‘Menu’ button Detailed guide on how to use the application "measurement" From Apple - iOS iPadOS

at the top left of the screen.

This feature is useful when you need to measure a series of objects. You can copy it to apps, save it to Notes, send it through Mail or any app where you want to save the list, or you can scan dimensions to start measuring again.

Manual ruler on your device

While some measurements can be a few centimeters away, measuring things with your iPhone is very convenient, and it’s usually worth the trade off for a small accuracy.

Thanks to technology improvements like LiDAR and AR, you don’t have to break a sweat just to get an estimate of the size of things. Sharing is very easy! Now you can check out the best augmented reality apps for interior design and decoration for Android.
