Samsung One UI vs Nova Launcher: Which launcher is better for you

Samsung’s infamous TouchWiz user interface finally gets a much-needed fix with the rollout of Android Pie. Thankfully, Samsung is getting every loyal TouchWiz fan out of the bloated misery of turning to third-party apps as launchers and other things.

With the introduction of One UI, the company has focused on the increasing pain points of the current generation, and at the same time, it has added useful functions for the end consumer.

As you might have guessed, One UI is far from perfect, but it’s once again the best shot at Android from the South Korean company, and reviewers and users have welcomed it with both hands.

While we’ve already compared the old TouchWiz to the fan-favorite Nova launcher, in this post we’re showing off Nova Launcher on OneUI to see if it’s good enough to be the default launcher on your phone? Let’s go deeper.

main screen

The beauty of Nova Launcher is that you can import your existing home screen design directly into the launcher. This is something not many launchers offer, and I’m sure you’ll appreciate the smooth switching.

Imagine the pain of setting up your entire home screen again, Nova Launcher does the heavy lifting for you.

Speaking of customization, you can change every detail with Nova Launcher. You can play with the desktop grid layout, icon layout, change the search bar, customize the dock, etc. Nova really hits the outside of the park with added options and functionality.

One UI allows you to change the grid of the Home screen and the grid of the Apps screen. Its launcher also enables you to show icon badge numbers, hide apps, adjust landscape mode, and more.

App Drawer

This is where you can see the true potential of this third-party player on Android. With One UI, options are limited to horizontal menus, hidden apps and sorted in alphabetical order.

Nova goes ahead with a plethora of customization options out there. You can add colors, turn on transparency options, add images, switch to a dark theme, and more.

Let’s say you’re not a fan of Samsung’s app drawer that still uses horizontal scrolling menus from the Android Lollipop days. With the help of Nova Launcher, you can change this behavior to Google’s vision.

dark mode

In the latest update of Nova Launcher, the company has added different types of dark theme. You can use the dark gray or solid black theme option. This will change the app drawer, folder, and dock background to dark mode, which is useful for saving some power on phones with an AMOLED panel.

On Samsung, you’ll need to head into Settings and turn the option back to dark mode. The change will be reflected in the Settings menu, Bixby page, Contacts, Messages, and other built-in Samsung apps.

The company also allows you to set the timer, which turns on dark mode in the evening and returns to the white appearance in the morning.

Note: You can see the difference between a third party and an OEM player here. Launchers like Nova and Action can only apply dark theme to app drawer, folder, launcher settings menu, and quick settings drawer. It will not and cannot change the details in the phone’s settings menu, notification panel, built-in apps, or lock screen.

FEED List

Samsung has replaced the default Google Now launcher with its own Bixby Home. The company even provides a dedicated hardware button in its main view for quick access to the menu.

Swipe left and the UI will welcome the main menu customized as per your usage. Displays the date, time, weather, calendar events, news stories, and widgets from built-in apps as well as third-party apps, and access actions and options like Twitter Trends from Bixby Home.

I like it more than Google Feed. It felt more personalized and convenient to me than Google Feed. My only issue is a slight lag that occurs when swiping left to the menu. It takes some time to update the feed list, which can be annoying sometimes.

Nova has implemented Google Now integration. You will need to install the Nova Google Companion app from APKMirror to use the function. Install the app and enable the Google Feed page in the user interface.

Additional Features

There’s a reason Nova is the undisputed king of customization. The company has added every little trick to make your smartphone look and feel exactly the way you want it to.

Nova weaves in many extras like exploring folder options, manipulating built-in gestures, and even playing with the app’s opening/closing animations from the settings menu.

Samsung has added a custom theme store, which changes icons, wallpapers, and other aspects of the user interface. Other functions include built-in screen recorder, game mode, play with navigation gestures, and more. One UI paid extra attention to the accessibility of key aspects of the UI.

Settings, Messages, Phone, Contacts, Gallery, and other apps carry the main options at the bottom. The good news is that these all apply to the third-party operator as well. Meaning, if you choose to use Nova, you can enjoy Samsung’s built-in add-ons as well.

Still confused?

Samsung One UI was a huge step up from the company’s old TouchWiz days. It’s lightweight, carefully executed, conforms to Google’s vision, and useless tricks are either scraped or buried in the settings menu. But then again, the customization options are limited compared to Nova Launcher. So, if you really want those extra launcher add-ons, go with Nova.
