Recover Deleted Files with Windows File Recovery

To recover files deleted using Windows File Recovery, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the app Microsoft Store and go to the Windows File Recovery page using the search bar.

  5. Before going any further into the recovery commands, create a folder where you will drop your recovered files. Here we name it Recover. It is recommended to create this folder on a different drive than the one on which you lost or deleted your files (a USB stick or an external drive will do just fine).

  7. Windows File Recovery can be accessed via the command winfr. The syntax is as follows:
    winfr lecteur-source: dossier-de-destination [/mode] [/n <filtres>] 

    For example :

    winfr C: D:Récup /regular /n Users<utilisateur>Downloads
    winfr C: D:Récup /regular /n "Users<utilisateur>DocumentsMes factures"
    winfr C: D:Récup /extensive /n *.pdf /n *.jpg
  8. Windows File Recovery offers two possible recovery modes:
    • Regular : Standard recovery option for uncorrupted NTFS drives. Use for recently deleted files on an NTFS drive.
      /regular/r
    • Extensive : Full recovery option suitable for all file systems. Use for files deleted on a FAT / exFAT drive or files deleted a long time ago on an NTFS drive (option to be used also after formatting or on a corrupted drive).

  9. To illustrate this tutorial, we will try to recover all files with .docx extension that were deleted on C drive and save them to D: Recover folder. Type the following command then do Y to continue :
    winfr C: D:Récup /r /n *.docx

    Windows File Recovery will search and recover in standard mode all deleted .docx files from drive C and place them in the Recover directory located on drive D.

  10. The process usually takes several minutes. When finished, tap on the Y to direct you to the folder where your recovered files are saved.

    i Note: Sometimes duplicates appear, the process is interrupted and you are asked to choose between:

    • (o) verwrite: overwrite the previous file
    • (s) kip: skip this step
    • (a) lways overwrite: always overwrite the previous file
    • (n) ever overwrite: never overwrite the previous file
    • (k) eep both once: keep both files for this time
    • keep (b) oth always: always keep both files
  11. Enter the directory Documents (since these are .docx files) then in docx.

  12. Find your lost or deleted files.
