We understand that you’re on Minecraft Chromebook want to play. It is one of the most popular games ever, which thrives on accessibility. You play the game on other mobile devices and laptops, so why not on your Chromebook? In this article we explain how you can do that.

What is Minecraft?

Perhaps you are not yet familiar with Minecraft and then an introduction is in order. You may be a parent of a child requesting this, or you may be clicking on this article purely out of interest. Either way, you’ve come to the right place. Minecraft is a game that is very suitable for young players.

If we have to make a comparison – which is just a little bit short – you can think of this as digital Lego. Now there are already Lego games of course, but rarely do we come across Lego adventures as big as Minecraft. Or games in general that stimulate creativity as Minecraft does.

You can do a lot of things in Minecraft. You can make things yourself, you can demolish buildings, you can play mini-games (that others have set up) and you can visit each other in a world of their own. Collaboration and creativity are central, which is why this is such a great game for kids.

Chances are your child has a Chromebook. After all, that is a nice and safe device that they can study on without too many distractions. Basically, a Chromebook is intended for working on, but recent models have excellent specifications on board for some games.

Fortunately, Minecraft is not a very ‘heavy game’, as experts call it. The Minecraft on Chromebook therefore requires relatively little from the hardware on board (think of the processor and the working memory, for example). But how does the game run on a Chromebook?

Now open the Google Play Store.

Look up Minecraft. Note the publisher of the game: it must be Mojang.

Choose Minecraft: Education Edition

There are two apps in the Google Play Store: Minecraft and Minecraft: Education Edition. The requirements for use are listed on the latter’s page. Read it carefully; you may qualify. The regular version of the app will not work on Chromebook.

Note: if you want to play, you need an Office 365 Education or Office 365 Commercial account. Otherwise you will unfortunately not be able to sign up and you will not be in the game. So you have to jump through quite a few hoops to get this done, but then you get a nice game in return.

If this method does not work for you or if you do not meet the requirements to install Minecraft on your Chromebook, there is another alternative, but it is a lot more complicated.
