All editions of the server software are affected by these update packs, namely Microsoft SQL Server Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter and even the free Express.

This inventory complements our download list of latest service packs for SQL Server which includes official information from Microsoft Tech Netpage which also offers cumulative updates (CU, Cumulative Updates) to have patches between two SPs.

Microsoft always recommends installing Service Packs to get the latest fixes for security, functionality, and stability. Since January 2016, the publisher also advises to install updates Cumulative Updates as soon as they are available.

Note: Microsoft has indicated that starting with SQL Server 2017 there will be no more service packs. The DBMS now follows the “modern servicing model” and only Cumulative Updates (CU) and General Distribution Releases (GDR) are released. These fixes are tracked for 5 years after the release date of the RTM version. “Extended support” and “Premium assurance” support extensions can extend the life cycle of SQL Server up to 16 years.
