Today’s technology has come a long way in bridging the gap between Windows and Mac applications, especially in the enterprise. However, there are still some gaps that require some tools to navigate between computing environments.

If you work from home and need to remotely access your Windows 10 PC from your Mac, we’ve got good news: the process is easy.

Microsoft offers a free tool to do the job. It lets you use Windows apps, access files, or do anything else on Windows right from your MacBook or other macOS device.

Step 1: Set up Remote Desktop on Windows 10

In order to use Microsoft Remote Desktop you need Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Windows Server. The application runs on Microsoft’s own RDP protocol, which is not available on the standard version of Windows 10 Home Edition. If you need to connect to a Home computer, one of the best remote access tools will help you.

The first steps are to set up Remote Desktop for Mac on your Windows PC.

On your Windows 10 device, open the Start menu and go to الإعدادات -> النظام -> سطح المكتب البعيد. Enable Remote Desktop, and click Confirm when prompted.

Your computer must be turned on and awake in order to be able to connect to it remotely. So you may want to activate the option to keep my computer awake from the power options. To do this, click Show settings next to it and set the sleep mode to Start. You should probably only do this if you need constant remote access to your computer. If you do not, it is wise to activate the sleep mode.

Next, scroll down to User Accounts. By default, the account you are signed in to will have remote access permissions automatically. To allow other users to log on remotely, click Select Users to add usernames.

Get your computer’s name and IP address

Finally, you need to get some information before you head to your Mac. In the same Remote Desktop menu, under How to connect to this computer, make a note of the name of the computer.

If the current name is generic and you want to make it something easy to remember, switch to the tab About and click Rename this computer.

This opens the Network Connection Properties screen. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the IPv4 address in the list. Make a note of this number.

When you make an RDP connection from Mac to Windows, you will see a security warning indicating that the certificate has not been verified. If you are at home, or working on a small business network, you can click Continue and dismiss the message. If you are on a large network with public access, you have to be careful when doing this.

Once you are connected

When your Mac successfully establishes the remote desktop connection, your Windows computer will lock and switch to the login screen. If anyone tries to use the computer, your remote session will expire. Two people cannot use the same computer at the same time.

Use Windows on your Mac

The remote desktop session opens in full screen unless you change the setting. To use it in a window instead, move your mouse pointer to the top of the screen and click the green window button at the top left.

Using Windows with Remote Desktop is a lot like using it on a dedicated PC.

One of the few changes — and a point of confusion — is that the app assigns keyboard shortcuts for cut, copy, and paste to those used in macOS, using a key Command. However, some other shortcuts continue to use the . key Ctrl As you do in Windows.

You can launch apps, work on files, or even play games if you want to. There may be a little lag during heavy use, but overall this setup is fast and responsive.

You cannot drag and drop files between Mac and Windows. The clipboard is shared by default though, so you can copy and paste between them instead.

For a greater level of file sharing, set up a shared folder using the local resource setting, as described above.

Detach and delete your desktop

To disconnect and end the session, simply close the Remote Desktop window on your Mac. You can modify your settings at any time by hovering over the thumbnail in Saved Desktop and clicking the pen icon.

To delete a desktop, right-click on the thumbnail and choose delete.

Remote access to your computer from anywhere

Microsoft Remote Desktop is an easy way to remotely access Windows 10 from your Mac. But what if you need to do it in reverse, or maybe you need access to a Linux computer or Chromebook?

The quickest solution here is to set up Chrome Remote Desktop, which is Google’s remote access tool that runs on any desktop computer that has Chrome installed. We’ve also shown how to remotely access your Mac from any platform.
