Microsoft Edge Chromium vs. Brave: Which Windows 10 Browser is Better

With the introduction of Windows 10 in 2015, Microsoft announced the all-new Microsoft Edge browser with its own EdgeHTML rendering engine. Even after three years of continuous improvements, the browser did not get an enthusiastic response from users and developers. In 2019, the software giant finally gave up and decided to join the Chromium web engine project to rebuild its browser. At the same time, a privacy-focused browser called Brave announced its arrival on desktop platforms including Windows and macOS.

Both browsers aim to grab the precious share of market leader Google Chrome. However, their approach is completely different. Microsoft is focused on taking advantage of Windows 10 integration with better swipe and gesture support. Brave relies on premium privacy extensions to count on new users.

In this post, we will compare each of the web browsers on different fronts, including the user interface, features, extension support, password manager, availability across platforms, and more. Let’s get started.

Availability on platforms

Brave has a slight advantage over Microsoft. The browser is available on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and even Linux. Microsoft Edge can be accessed on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. There is no Linux support yet, but Microsoft plans to bring it in in the future.

User interface and customization options

I enjoyed the old Microsoft Edge user interface. And it’s quite disappointing that Microsoft didn’t port it to the new Chromium-based browser. This disappeared with the effect of acrylic. The app uses the standard Chromium user interface. It is just like the Google Chrome browser.

Microsoft Edge also supports the dark theme from Settings. However, it will not respect the Windows 10 dark theme.

Brave is similar to Microsoft Edge here. Nothing major changes compared to Google Chrome. However, the settings menu is better organized and looks very good. The app also respects Windows 10’s dark mode. I’ve noticed some good use of icons throughout the user interface. Reload, back, forward, bookmark, and other icons look great.

Microsoft Edge offers one of the best default home screens with one limitation. It defaults to Inspirational, which shows Bing search, most used apps, and a beautiful background. You can change it to Informational to bring in the Bing News integration, or if you want a simple look, choose a focused home. The only sad part is that there is no way to set Google as the default search engine.

The default Brave page is all about Brave’s privacy efforts. The design displays relevant information such as background image, clock, Brave stats, top sites, and Brave rewards. No unnecessary news integration. The search engine can also be changed to Bing, DuckDuckGo, StartPage or Qwant.

Performance and Features

Earlier with the EdgeHTML rendering engine, Microsoft Edge had performance issues with a lot of websites. With the move to Chromium, it’s no longer a display issue. It works as expected. I also found scrolling is better in Microsoft’s new browser. The company is committed to improving the default Chromium code, so all Chromium browsers will eventually get the benefits.

Edge Chromium offers an excellent reading mode. Press the read icon on the address bar, and remove the unnecessary items. You can change the font style, text size, reading topic, and more.

Brave handles small details very well. For example, when you hover your mouse over any click, it will display the web address of that tab. The company offers Brave Rewards. The program displays Brave ads based on your location and interests and you can earn up to $5 a month.

One can also set it to auto contribute. Brave contribute your rewards to favorite publishers and content creators. As for performance, I don’t see any major lag or performance issues during the limited testing period. Unfortunately, reading mode is missing from Brave. It is necessary these days.

Microsoft Edge and Brave both offer to save passwords. You can sync them and access the information on each device.

Brave offers a crypto wallet. You can store and manage cryptocurrencies in the browser and view the wallet on each device.

Extension and privacy support

One possible reason why the original Microsoft Edge won’t boot is the lack of extension support. With the new Edge Chromium device, it has access to thousands of existing add-ons. However, you will not be able to find it in the app. You need to visit the Chrome Web Store, allow permission to download the extension from the third-party store, and then install it on your browser.

In terms of security, Microsoft has turned on Balanced Tracking Protection from Settings. It blocks social trackers, ads, and malicious trackers.

To download extensions on Brave, head to Settings > Extensions > Get More Extensions, and the Chrome Web Store will open. Download and install related items from the Store.

Brave emphasizes security and privacy features. Browser protects each site and blocks site trackers, auto-play videos, and cross-site device trackers. However, it will not block ads. You can view the blocked live data and the estimated time saved on the main screen.

Which one should you use

With the revamped Edge Chromium call, it’s hard to recommend either one. Microsoft Edge has better reading and scrolling mode and extensive Chrome extension support. Brave offers more features like crypto wallet, Brave rewards, and shield protection with live data. So it is entirely up to you to choose the best browser out of these two. Instead, I suggest you install both and try them individually.
