What is the cause of microphone problems?

So why and how do microphone problems arise? Your microphone can get hurt for many reasons, the most common of which is that the phone is dirty. If you’re not someone who cleans their phone regularly, you might be surprised to learn how much dirt has accumulated over the years.

Other common issues are related to system updates and third-party app installations. These apps usually tend to reconfigure or disable the microphone without you even realizing it. Your microphone can also be damaged due to actual issues, such as internal malfunctions or hardware damage due to mishandling of your phone.

How do you know if your Android microphone has problems?

If you suspect that your microphone may be damaged or malfunctioning, it is best to test it to be sure. Here’s how to test your Android microphone.

record your voice

The easiest way to make sure your microphone is working is to record your voice using your phone and listen to the recording. You can easily see if your voice sounds distorted to help you confirm the problem.

Most Android phones come with a built-in voice recorder that you can use. If you don’t have one already installed, you can download and use a voice recorder app like ASR Voice Recorder.

Ways to Fix Android Microphone Problems

If you have confirmed that your microphone is not working properly, you can now proceed to fix it. Since there are many reasons why your phone microphone might malfunction, let’s move on to different methods to fix your problem.

1. Reboot and check for updates

Sometimes the easiest solution is the best solution. Rebooting your smartphone refreshes your system by clearing all processes and opening apps. It can be a quick fix to your problem.

Hold the Power button until the menu appears, then choose الطاقة -> إيقاف التشغيل. Leave it off for 30–60 seconds before turning it back on, then check to see if the issue is resolved.

If a quick restart does not work, check for software updates under الإعدادات -> النظام -> خيارات متقدمة -> تحديث النظام or similar. A new system update will usually fix any bugs/problems that may be present in the current version, which may be affecting your microphone.

2. Clean the phone’s microphone

If you don’t clean your phone occasionally, dirt may build up in the small openings of your device, such as the microphone port. Simply wiping your phone is not enough, as dust or small debris can accumulate.

Your microphone is a small hole or other port located next to the USB connector, usually at the bottom of your phone. Grab a small pin, fine needle, or similar and use it to gently clean the microphone. Another alternative is to blow directly, to remove all accumulated debris. However, if you do, be careful not to inject more air into the phone.

Another aspect to check while cleaning is the case or screen protector. When you put a new protective item on your phone, you’ll likely cover the microphone with it. Make sure that no part of the case is blocking the microphone, and that there is no buildup of dust trapped inside the slits of the case either.

3. Configure sound settings

Some Android phones come with a feature called noise suppression or noise reduction. Noise suppression helps reduce background noise when making a call or recording a video.

For those unaware of this, the result may seem a bit confusing, so it’s easy to assume that something is wrong with the microphone. Here’s how to disable the setting to make sure your microphone is in order:

  • Go to the Settings app.
  • Locate Connection Settings or Audio settings.
  • Search for an option Noise Reduction And disable it.
  • Restart your phone and check if the problem is resolved.

Please note that not all Android phones have this feature, and it may appear in a different place for you.

Aside from this option, there is also a possibility that you left your phone connected to a Bluetooth headset or other device with a microphone. If so, your phone will use that as the primary microphone instead of the built-in microphone.

Be sure to check what’s currently online under الإعدادات -> الأجهزة المتصلة. Disable any active Bluetooth devices and try using the microphone again to fix your problem.
