How to unshare a Google Doc

If you share a Google Docs document with someone, but you no longer want them to have access to that document, you can stop sharing it with them simply by adjusting your sharing settings. Here’s how.

Unsharing a Google Doc on Desktop

There are two ways you can share a Google Docs document — by sharing with a link or by adding someone to a document using their email. You can unshare a Google Doc no matter what method was originally used to share it, but the steps are slightly different for each.

Email sharing

If you invite someone to a Google Doc using their email, unsharing the document is as simple as removing their email from it.

To get started, open the Google Docs document that you want to stop sharing. In the upper-right corner of the window, you will see a button “to share. If you hover your cursor over this button, a tooltip will appear telling you how many people you have shared the document with. Go ahead and click it.

The pop-up window for sharing the document will appear. Locate the name of the person you want to remove from the document. To the right, you’ll see their current privileges. Click the down arrow next to it.

After that, click on “Removalfrom the bottom of the dropdown menu that appears.

Finally, click on the blue button”save.

The person you removed from the list will now not be able to access the Google Docs document.

Share link

Another way to share is to send a link to others, either to the file page or to the direct download, with certain permissions. You can undo this simply by changing the link permissions.

Open the document you want to stop sharing, then click the blue Share button in the upper-right corner of the window. You can also see a tooltip if you hover your cursor over the button”to share. This tool tip tells you who can access the document using the link based on the specific permissions.

A popup will appear. Click “A change” in a group Get the link.

In the next window, you will see the link, and under it, you will see Permissions that is assigned to that link. Permission must be set to “restricted”, which means that only people you have added with their email can access the document through this link. Click the down arrow to bring up the options menu.

After that, click on “restrictedfrom the dropdown menu.

Finally, click on the blue button”It was completedin the lower-right corner of the pop-up window.

Anyone who previously had access to the document containing the link will now need to add it with their email to regain access.

If you’d rather have someone else manage a file, don’t forget that you can easily change the owner of the file in Google Drive.

Unsharing a Google Doc on mobile

You can also stop sharing a document from the Google Docs mobile app on iOS or Android. Since there are two ways to share a Google Doc, there are also two ways to unshare it.

Email sharing

Click the icon to launch the app and then select the document you want to stop sharing. Click on the three dots next to the document title.

After that, click on “to sharein the popup that appears.

You will now be in the sharing screen, where you will find all the users who have access to the document. Click any of the icons in this section.

On the next screen, you will see a list of users who have access to the document, along with their email addresses and their privileges. Click on the user you want to remove.

A window with several privileges to choose from will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click “Remove” at the bottom of this list.

The user will now be removed from the list and will not have access to this document.

Share link

Launch the Google Docs app and tap the three dots next to the title of the document you want to stop sharing.

After that, choose “to sharefrom the menu that appears.

The sharing screen will appear. Here, you’ll see your profile picture, and to the left of that, you’ll see an icon that varies based on your type Permissions that is set on the link. Click on this icon.

in a group “Link settings” On the next page, you will need to set the permissions to “restricted. Click on the optionA change” located under Current Permissions.

On the link settings screen, tap the top option to change Permissions.

On the next screen, click on “restricted.

Now anyone with the link must be added using their email to regain access to the document using the link.

If you decide you want to start sharing the document again, you can always go back and adjust the settings to do so. There is even a simple trick to share the link to a Google Doc as a PDF or as a web page.
