How to recover deleted files and folders in Microsoft OneDrive

Arguably, there is no worse feeling than deleting a file or folder that you didn’t mean to delete. If this unfortunate event occurred in your Microsoft OneDrive account, there are a few recovery options at your disposal.

Restore a deleted file from the OneDrive recycle bin

If you delete a file or folder from your OneDrive account, you can restore them fromrecycle bin“Within 30 days. After 30 days, the deleted file or folder is automatically and permanently deleted from the Recycle Bin.

You can do this from your desktop or mobile device.

First, sign in to your OneDrive account from your desktop, then click “recycle bin” in the right pane.

Once you reach “recycle binRight-click on the file or folder you want to restore and then clickRecoveryfrom the context menu.

The selected file or folder will then be restored. If you want to restore every file and folder in the Recycle Bin at once, click the Restore All Items option at the top of the screen.

A confirmation window will appear. Click the blue buttonRecovery” to follow.

All files and folders will be restored.

Recover a deleted file or folder via a mobile device

To recover a deleted OneDrive file or folder using your mobile device, you will need to download the OneDrive app for iOS or Android. Once installed, click on the application icon to launch it.

Once you are in the application, click on “filesat the bottom of the screen.

Next, click on “recycle bin” at the bottom of the folder list.

In the Recycle Bin, locate the file or folder you want to restore, tap the three dots to the right of it, and select “Recoveryfrom the menu that appears at the bottom of the screen.

If you want to select multiple files and folders at once, tap and hold the first file, then select the other files you want to restore by tapping on them. A blue check mark will appear to the left of the selected files.

Next, tap on the Restore icon located in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Your files and folders will be restored.

Recover a deleted file from your computer’s recycle bin

If you deleted a file or folder from OneDrive, and it synced with your computer, you can also restore that file or folder from the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac). Note that this will not work if you delete an online-only file in OneDrive.

First, open the Recycle Bin or Recycle Bin on your computer. Once there, locate the file or folder you want to restore and then right-click on it. Or, if you want to restore all files and folders, press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Command + A (Mac) and then right-click any file or folder. Next, click on Restore from the context menu that appears.

The selected file or folder will then be restored.

Restore your OneDrive account to an earlier version (Microsoft 365 only)

If you are a Microsoft 365 subscriber, there is an additional recovery option available to you – whole OneDrive recovery. Not only is this useful for recovering deleted files, but you can also take advantage of it if one of your files becomes corrupted or becomes infected with malware.

To restore your OneDrive account to a previous version, sign in to your OneDrive account and then click the “gearin the upper-right corner of the window.

A menu will appear Settings. Click “Optionswithin the OneDrive settings group.

On the next screen, you will see a new list of options in the left pane. Here, click on the option “OneDrive Restore” near the bottom of the list.

Now you’ll need to verify your identity, so go ahead and click the blue button “Verifying your identity”.

A one-time seven-digit code will be sent to your email address. Enter the code in the text box and then click the blue button”verification.

Once verified, you will be at the Restore OneDrive screen. Click the box under Select a date, then choose the time you’d like to restore OneDrive to from the drop-down list. You can choose between yesterday, one or three weeks ago, or set a custom date and time.

Once you have selected the date, click on “Recovery.

Now you will need to confirm that you want to restore OneDrive to the specified date, then again, click on the blue button”Recovery.

The restore process will then start. Before long, all your files and folders will be restored to the specified date and time.

There are many ways to back up your files and folders — from cloud providers to external hard drives to another computer. Backing up your files and folders in multiple locations is the best way to protect your data.
