How to record phone calls and conversations on iPhone

As a result of the laws of your country and state, Apple has not added any built-in option to record phone calls. Apple’s near-perfect privacy settings are one of the reasons why it attracts so many users around the world. However, you can still record iPhone phone calls using some easily accessible workarounds.

Secretly recording a telephone conversation can lead to severe legal consequences. If you are going to use any of these methods, be sure to notify the person on the other end of the call and get their consent to start recording. You can also check if it is possible to spy on any phone without having physical access to the target phone?

Once the setup is done, there are several ways you can record a phone conversation on iPhone.

This is probably the fastest and easiest way to record a phone call from your iPhone. You’ll need another device with a microphone that can record audio (such as an iPhone, iPad, computer, or portable recording device) for it to work.

Check out our podcast microphone recommendations for some high-quality audio recording options.

Provided you’re in a quiet environment and can use your iPhone’s speakerphone, it’s easy to get carried away:

  • Call your contact and tap on the speaker icon. Inform the other party that you will be recording the conversation.
  • After obtaining approval, start recording on the external registrar.
  • Place the phone near the recording device’s microphone. Stay physically close to the recording device if you want to record your own audio as well.
  • You can hang up when you have finished the conversation.
  • Save your recording.

On a separate iOS device, you can record the call using Apple’s Voice Memos app. On a Mac or PC, we recommend editing and recording audio for free with Audacity. You can check out this guide to using Audacity if you haven’t used it before.

Record incoming iPhone calls with Google Voice

Google Voice is a free VoIP calling service available in the United States and Canada. They give you a free phone number, a voice mailbox, and the ability to make local (free) and international (based on Google voice call rates).

One of the advantages of the companion app is its ability to record phone calls. Before you can do that, you’ll need to spend some time setting up the service:

  • Download and launch the Google Voice app (free). Sign in with your Google account.
  • Click on search. Select the new phone number you want to associate with your Google Voice account.
  • Confirm your number. Click Next until you are asked to enter your phone number.
  • Enter your iPhone phone number. Confirm and wait for the verification code.
  • Verify the new Google Voice setting using the code you just received.

There is one last step that you need to complete before you can record calls. Open the Google Voice website and sign in to your Google account. Click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the page to open the settings menu.

Here, select the Calls tab menu on the left side of the page. Then scroll down and enable Incoming Call Options by tapping on the toggle on the right.

When you receive a phone call via your Google Voice account, you will be able to press the 4 key on the iPhone’s dial pad to start recording the conversation. When you do this, Google will notify the other party that the call is being recorded. You’ll find your recording in your Google Voice inbox, where you can download it for safekeeping.

Unfortunately, due to legal and security purposes, there is no way to record an outgoing phone call using Google Voice.

Use a third-party app to record phone calls

The third-party app known as Rev Call Recorder is another good option for recording phone calls if you live in the US and have a US working phone number.

First, download and open Rev Call Recorder (Free, in-app purchases). You will need to confirm your phone number by adding it when prompted and entering the code you receive. The process is a bit complicated, but fortunately, the app offers a built-in tutorial.

Once done, tap Start Recorded Call, then choose Outgoing Call or Incoming Call. For outgoing calls, you need to call the Rev Call Recorder service, and then call the person you want to talk to. After both calls are connected, press the Merge Call button to start recording.

For incoming calls, the process is slightly different but simple.

Once the call is complete, Rev will call you when your recorded call is ready to download. Optional paid transcription services will also appear at this point.

The main advantage of Rev Call Recorder is that, unlike many other call recording services, the person you are talking to will see your phone number, rather than an unknown number.

However, your calls are stored on another company’s servers, so you probably don’t want to use this service for private or sensitive matters.

How to Record Calls on iPhone Using Your Voicemail

This final method largely depends on your mobile operator for the functionality. First, you need to check if your carrier allows you to download your voicemails.

Launch the Phone app on your iPhone and click on the Voicemail tab in the lower right corner. If a list of voicemails pops up, that’s great! You can download and keep it on your device for future operation purposes.

If you see the option to call voicemail only, you’re not so out of luck. You will not be able to download voicemail messages. However, you may be able to save it to your carrier’s audible voicemail. This means that you will have to keep calling your voicemail every time you want to start playing the message.

To download these messages externally, you can probably try using the megaphone method we discussed above. Again depending on your carrier, you can try a similar recording method using your own voicemail and call integration:

  • Call your contact and get approval to record the call.
  • On your iPhone, tap Add Call to start a three-way conversation.
  • Call your own phone number. You should get your voicemail inbox.
  • Wait for the voicemail greeting to finish. Click Merge calls to start the conference.
  • You can now hang up. Your conversation should be recorded as a message that you can retrieve from your voice mailbox.

Which iPhone Call Recorder Method is Right for You?

Each network provider and iOS device work a little differently, so you may need to try some registration methods until you find what works for you.

The most reliable way to record a phone call on your iPhone is to use the speakerphone method or pay for a third-party service to record the call for you. In any case, in order to operate legally, you should always make sure to notify the other party that you are registering them.
