So you’ve moved on to a Mac, kept your old Windows PC, and now you’ve both connected to your home router. So how do you access your Windows files from macOS in order to transfer them to your new device?
You can certainly set up an FTP or SSH server, but that’s a plus for a regular home network and difficult to set up. However, it turns out that macOS can access Windows’ shared folders very easily. Read on to find out how this worked.
Although there are many ways to share files between Windows and Mac, perhaps the easiest is to use SMB sharing that is built into both Windows and Mac. All you need is to connect both devices to the same WiFi network. In this article, we are going to set up shared folders on Windows and access them from Mac. let’s start.
After following this article, you will be able to share folders from your Windows PC and access them through your Mac. You will also be able to copy and delete files directly from your Mac without having to get up from your table. Step 1. Enable File Sharing on Windows 10
The first thing you need to do is enable file sharing on your Windows which will allow everyone on your network to access it. You can either connect a LAN cable to both devices or connect your devices to the same Wi-Fi network to ensure high speed data transfer. Sure, the speeds won’t be as high as a wired connection, but it will still be better than using Google Drive or USB flash drives.
The first step is to enable the option “File sharingOn your Windows PC, you can go to the next step if it is already enabled. Go to Settings and open”Network and Sharing Center.

A new window will open, go to the right pane and click “Advanced sharing settingsto open the sharing settings.
On this page, you will see three different network profiles; Networks own Andthe public AndAll networks. Enable “Network discovery and file sharingon all three profiles. If you are concerned about your privacy, you can do this on your existing profile and everything else should still work. Click “Saving changes.
Unfortunately, this method of file sharing will not work if you have not set up a password on your computer. In this case, you will have to set a new password by going to User account in Windows settings.
Now after enabling”File sharingWe will share a folder. Open your Windows computer and go to the directory you want to share. To clarify, I’m going to share a folder from the drive
C But you can share any folder of your choice.
Right-click on the folder, and click “Properties.
Go to the tab “to shareand click the buttonto share“within”Share network files and folders.
Here you can add people who can access the shared folder. If the folder you want to share does not contain sensitive data, type “Everyone, then clickaddition, then clickto share. Your folder is now shared with every user on the network it’s connected to.
Make sure that you have allowed reading and writing to the shared folder in Windows. This way, you can save and delete files in this folder from your Mac later.
You can see the shared folder in the image below. The phrase underlined in red is the host name of your Windows computer. Write it down somewhere because we will need it later to establish the connection.
To access the shared folder on a Mac computer, open Finder and on the menu bar at the top, click
Go -> Connect to Server. or press
CMD + K on the keyboard.
Enter the hostname that you noted down earlier while sharing the folder on Windows. write “
smb://WINDOWS-HOSTNAME” and hit enter and change HOSTNAME with what you wrote down.
The next window will prompt you to enter the credentials and to enter the username and password for your Windows computer, when done click on “Contact.
All shared folders will be displayed, choose one of the folders you want to upload to your Mac.
You’ve gained access, you can now access all the files of the shared folder. Simply open the Finder and search for the name of your Windows PC in the Finder sidebar. Clicking it will bring up your Windows folder. However, you will get an error message if your Windows PC shuts down or shuts down.
You will see your Windows folder where you can drag and drop files or even delete them, depending on the permission you set while setting up Windows sharing for that folder.
