Our smartphones are like a multi-tool, but the primary function of a phone is to make calls. And for that, we use the phone or the dialer app. So it should be to our liking. Here we are going to compare the two popular dialer apps – one from Samsung and the other from Google.
Both brands offer their apps on their phones and not everyone likes these apps. The beauty of Android phones is that you can customize anything. Be it contacts, launcher, and even dialer app.
We have already compared several Samsung apps to Google apps. In this post, we will compare in detail the Phone app from Samsung and Google. Let’s check it out.
Both phone apps have a normal user interface. They are also similar in many ways.
At the bottom, you will find three tabs on both apps. While the Samsung phone app houses the keyboard, recents, and contacts, the Google Phone app is home to your favorites, recents, and contacts. In the Google phone app, you will find a floating button in the lower right corner of the keyboard.
In both apps, search is at the top. While Google offers a search bar, Samsung has reserved the place for the search icon only. Keeping only the search icon hides the voice search feature, which is available directly in the Google Phone app.
Also, you will notice that in Google apps, all icons are accompanied by text, which is not the case in Samsung app. Although identifying call icons is not a difficult task, sometimes having text in them comes in handy.
Favorites and connection speed
Dial the number plays an important role in determining the superiority of the dialer app. In the Google Phone app, you can add numbers to the Favorites section, which gets a special and separate place in the bottom bar. Right below Favorites, you’ll find another section featuring your most frequently contacted contacts. Unfortunately, you cannot create speed dial entries in this app.
In the Samsung Phone app, you will get both favorites and speed dial. However, favorites do not get a dedicated section. You will find them under the Contacts tab. If that sounds too far off, you can keep the numbers as a speed dial. So, touch and hold any number on the keyboard. You will be asked to assign a contact to this number. Once set, touch and hold the same number again to dial it immediately.
Gestures make our life easy. Fortunately, the Samsung Phone app supports gestures. On the Recents screen, swipe right to call someone and swipe left to message them. Unfortunately, the Google Phone app does not support gestures yet. I hope Google will add some soon.
View messages in call history
If you’re the type of person who likes to keep a log of all your communications — whether it’s messages or calls, you’ll love the Samsung Phone app. In this application, besides calls, you can also view the history of your messages. And if you don’t like it, the feature can be disabled in the app’s settings. For that, tap on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the Phone app and select Hide messages. The Google Phone app does not offer this feature.
Integrated business search
The search bar at the top of the Google Phone app may seem simple, but it isn’t. It’s a little Google search in itself. You can use it to find contact numbers for nearby businesses in your area. So, type the name of the place, and it will show the relevant results.
To use this feature, you need to activate Nearby places in the app settings. For that, tap on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner and select Settings. Then tap on nearby places. Turn on the toggle for nearby places. You can even activate custom search results. Therefore, you will have to give access to the Google account. This feature is not available in the Samsung Phone app.
In the Recents screen, you will find all the call logs. But if you want to filter call history, Samsung Phone app offers better experience as compared to Google Phone app. That’s because you can filter call logs as missed calls, rejected calls, dialed calls, and incoming calls. It is very useful when you are looking for a number in call logs. In Google, you can only filter for missed calls.
Spam protection and call blocking
Both apps allow you to block contacts without installing a third-party app. You can even block unknown callers. When it comes to spam protection, both apps deliver. However, the possibility of spam protection depends on your region.
Note: Samsung uses Hiya to identify spam calls.
You may not use this feature regularly, but if you want to record calls, Samsung’s Phone app comes with a built-in call recording capability. The Google Phone app lacks this feature.
Note: The call recording feature is not available in all countries due to privacy laws. So if the feature is missing in your phone, it may be blocked there. In countries like India, you can use this feature.
Availability Samsung Phone
Google Phone app works on all Android devices running Android. Similarly, the Samsung Phone app is limited to Samsung phones. Both apps are not available on the Play Store. So you cannot install it on any other device directly.
On the other hand, the grass is green
If you have a Samsung phone, you might think that the Google Phone app is better, and the same will be the case with users who have Android phones running the Google Phone app. However, as you saw above, both offer all the important features. There is not much difference between the two.
Since you cannot install any of the apps on different devices, we suggest trying some other caller apps if you want to switch.
