Google Home on Windows: this is how you use the app on a laptop or PC

You can use Google Home on Windows, but only if you’re willing to jump through a few hoops. You need special software for this. In this article we explain which software you need exactly and how to install the Google Home app on a PC with Windows.

Maybe you don’t have an Android or iOS device and you really want to use things like Chromecast and Google Home. For the first group of people, you can easily do this via the Google Chrome or Firefox browsers, for example. But what about the second group of users?

Google Home on Windows

We’ll get you straight out of the dream: you can’t just install the Google Home app, as well as the Google Assistant, on Windows, regardless of the version you have. Fortunately, you can install the software via a detour on your computer or laptop with Windows 10 or Windows 11 on board.

So using Google Home on Windows is not an impossible task. You just have to put in a little more effort than you might be used to. It is therefore not a simple matter of finding the right software in the Microsoft Store, downloading it and being able to do what you want right away.

But how do we get this done. Actually, the answer to that question is very simple: you just download an Android emulator. With such an emulator on your PC you emulate the Android environment on hardware that is not intended for that. But this is of course useful.

The Android Emulator

An emulator is not illegal software. On the contrary, it is a handy program that allows you to use elements of or complete operating systems on devices that are made for a different purpose. This way you are not dependent on smartphones and tablets to use Android.

So the moment you use an Android emulator on your Windows computer, you can run Android applications on your Windows PC. With the launch of Windows 11, this is made easy for everyone, because Microsoft has partnered with Amazon.

You can (soon) download the Amazon App Store from the Microsoft Store. When you do that, you install all kinds of Android applications without too much effort. This only concerns the Android apps that Amazon offers; that offer is quite different from the Google Play Store.

Therefore – even as a Windows 11 user – it is still a good idea to use an emulator. The most famous and popular Android emulator is Bluestacks. With that program you can easily run Google Home on Windows, regardless of the version you are currently running.

You must also be the administrator of your own computer (also called administrator). For the best experience, use Windows 10 (and otherwise 11), have at least 8 GB of RAM, use a solid state drive (ssd) in your PC, and have a fast or modern graphics card.

Visit the Bluestacks website and download the most recent version of the program. Then take the steps below.

Save the download file (installation file) and open it so you can install it.

You should now see an installation file at the bottom of your browser.

After installing, Bluestacks should start up automatically. This may take some time. The time it takes depends on how fast your computer is.

Installing Bluestacks is easy; you simply follow the steps in the picture.

Don’t have a Google account? Then you create one here. You need that account to access Google Play. Otherwise you can’t apps to download.

After logging in, you can download the apps you want, including Google Home.

You do this via the search field of the download store.
