Gboard vs Samsung Keyboard: Should You Switch to Gboard?

There are a lot of great things about Samsung phones. Called bloatware or extra features, Samsung phones feature a wide range of apps. Sure enough, it also comes with a company-branded keyboard app – Samsung Keyboard. As expected, it has a bunch of features. However, the question of the hour is, does it have enough features to beat the popular Gboard app?

With a particular focus on speed and reliability, Gboard is one of the most popular keyboard apps out there. So, should you ditch the default Samsung keyboard in favor of Gboard? Well, let’s find out!

1. GOOGLE SEARCH: GBOARD has the upper hand

The main advantage that Gboard has over any other keyboard, at the moment, is the built-in Google search. All you have to do is type in the query, hit the search button and the results will be loaded instantly. Search cards easy for the eyes Sharing them is simple and straightforward.

This feature is especially useful while chatting as you can share information from the internet without leaving the current app.

Needless to say, Google’s strength isn’t with the Samsung keyboard. Therefore, you will have to exit the current application to search for something, or you can switch to the multi-window view.

2. Scrolling controls: slide and type

Both Samsung keyboard and Gboard support swipe or gesture typing controls. Although both manage to get the words right, the implementation is a little different.

Gboard will show you the word being configured as you slide over the keyboard. This way, you will know if the words are formed correctly, and if they are not, you will know when and where to stop. On the other hand, the Samsung keyboard is the more traditional way to show you the word once your fingers stop sliding.

Samsung keyboard uses the most traditional way to show you the word as soon as you stop typing

Although this method of implementation may not be much of an issue for some, I find it annoying. I’d rather save time than write the whole word and then see results that don’t meet expectations.

3. Cursor control: quick writing and editing

Apart from the above fact, Gboard has an additional cursor control option. This feature allows you to move the cursor across lines of text by moving your finger across the space bar. Similarly, you can remove text in bulk by swiping your finger across a backspace.

Interestingly, the Samsung keyboard app also supports cursor control but you can only enable one feature at a time. It’s either scroll writing or cursor control.

So, you need to decide which of these features has more priority for you – is it forming words quickly or selecting/deleting texts in bulk.

If you ask me, it’s 2018 and your keyboard should give you the option to do both.

4. Text Shortcuts: Take the Shortest Path

Fortunately, both Gboard and Samsung Keyboard have the option of text shortcuts. You can add your own abbreviations for your most frequently used phrases or sentences.

Both app shortcuts work in a similar way and adding text shortcuts is similar.

5. GIF and emoji icons: search and share

It is true that emojis and GIFs add a fun element to any conversation. Both keyboards have you covered in this area because they have a bunch of emojis and stickers to fill in the gaps in the conversation.

However, there is a slight difference. Gboard lets you search emojis, stickers, and GIFs. Just type the keyword and the list will be displayed instantly.

Things are a little different with the Samsung keyboard. Here, you have to scroll through the long pages of emojis and stickers. The bummer, if you ask me. On the bright side, Samsung keyboard supports some extra stickers to add to the fun element.

Gboard’s experience with GIFs doesn’t end here. In fact, it is constantly improving. You can even create your own personal GIFs which are very cool.

The best thing about this feature is that it works on both the front camera and the back camera and lets you create them without leaving the current app.

6. Clipboard: easy copying, reusable

The portfolio has its own set of benefits for a lazy person like me. I generally prefer copying reusable text snippets during chats, rather than writing them down (addresses, greetings, etc.). Although both apps support the clipboard, it is very basic and similar to the stock Android clipboard and nowhere near the clipboard functionality you find in SwiftKey.

You will be able to use the clipboard during your conversations in WhatsApp, Messenger and standard messages. However, it is disabled once Gmail is opened. So, you have to resort to the old way of writing details.

The point of difference between both the apps is that you will have to long tap to get the clipboard option in Gboard while the Samsung keyboard has a dedicated icon at the top of the keyboard.

7. Special Characters: How do you get to them quickly

Here’s the thing – special characters are just as important as punctuation in conversations. Of course, both apps have these special characters, but the point is how quickly you can access them.

Samsung keyboard allows you to long press the period key and all the special characters will appear there. And until you choose a key, a prompt will be waiting for you.

Gboard adopts a faster implementation of the above process. You will have to tap on the period key and pass your finger to the character you want, without lifting the finger. Yes, very subtle differences, but they are very important.

Another feature that I loved about the Samsung keyboard is that you can choose the symbol you want in the character tray.

8. Features

Gboard is the ultimate winner when it comes to themes. It supports about twenty different themes, both in plain background and photo wallpapers.

Unfortunately, Samsung keyboard does not have any themes. You heard it right – nothing! You can just choose from plain white, or you can choose to have a few more colors from the accessibility options.

9. Prediction script

It is indisputable that the main player in any keyboard app is word prediction and Gboard does a good job at that. It depends on your writing style and you don’t take the time to suggest the words you usually use. After all, we are talking about Google.

The Samsung keyboard is also good at text prediction and gets it right most of the time, but there is a slight gap in implementation. So, when it comes to comparing the two apps, I prefer using Gboard.

However, at the end of the day, text prediction is a long-term process and takes time for the keyboard to know your typing style and vice versa.

10. User interface and design

Gboard and Samsung Keyboard look quite similar at first glance. There isn’t much difference in the user interface, after all, it’s a keyboard we’re talking about.

All the additional features of Gboard, such as search, icons, etc., are neatly placed without cluttering the app. Additionally, the Settings menu has a wealth of customizable options that you can tweak to your preference.

The interface of the Samsung keyboard features a smart touch. A switch in the corner of the keyboard allows you to quickly switch between predictive text and various options. If you ask me, I found this approach to be much better than that of Gboard.

Since there are no extra keys for emojis and the like at the bottom of the keyboard, it’s large and clutter-free. It allows me to write freely without having to worry about my big thumb. Of course, I can increase the size of the keyboard in Gboard, but then the overall size will increase, which I can’t imagine.

Which one is the best?

Samsung’s keyboard may not have all the bells and whistles as its competitor, but it’s not like it’s going to need it. Most of us rarely use the Google search card in our daily conversations or create a GIF on a daily basis.

It’s safe to say that Samsung’s keyboard is good at what it does, i.e. get your ideas across to the other end and it stops there. On the other hand, Gboard promises to do more than just write your thoughts. It’s more about productivity and how quickly you get your work done.

So, if you’re all about productivity, then yes, it’s worth the switch!
