Gaming on a Chromebook: literally everything you need to know

Gaming on a Chromebook is possible, but if you think that’s not possible, we understand. A Chromebook you use it more often for work or school assignments, but fortunately a lot is also possible in the field of entertainment, with interactive as in this case.

Gaming on a Chromebook

Before we go through the options with you, it’s useful to know that in some cases you can use a controller. But how do you know which controller is exactly right for your Chromebook? Fortunately, you don’t have to think about that for long.

There is a good chance that you have a controller at home that works with Chromebook. Especially when you have a recent version of the Chrome OS on your Chromebook. For example, it is possible to use the controllers of the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

In many cases, you simply connect your USB controller to your Chromebook and you can start gaming right away. At the end of 2020, Google released an update that also makes connection via Bluetooth possible. So you have quite a few options for gaming on your Chromebook.

Of course you can also play with a keyboard and mouse on a Chromebook, provided the game has support for this.

Google Stadia

We’ll start with the most obvious option: Google Stadia. This is the game streaming service of the search engine giant. You can buy and play games separately, just via the browser on your Chromebook. And with a Stadia Controller, you get access to all the features Google Stadia has to offer. All you have to think about is a fast internet connection.

In principle you can play games or WiFi, but with an Ethernet cable in your Chromebook you may have more security. When you have a Stadia Pro subscription, you get a number of free games every month that you can play. That subscription costs 9.99 euros per month. If you prefer not to pay, there may be an even better option for you.

Of course you can also buy individual games in Google Stadia, including more and more large titles. You do not need an active subscription to play these games, you pay once for these games on a Chromebook. You can then also play it on other devices, such as (via a Chromecast Ultra) on the TV.

Steam Link

When you install the Steam Link app on your Chromebook, you can play your games that are on your computer. You need the Android application that you download from the Google Play Store (more on that later). Otherwise, install Steam via Linux.

Officially there is no support for the Chromebook or the Chrome OS built in by Valve, the platform holder of Steam. So if you download the Android app, you may run into problems. But for the same money you are lucky and everything works properly.

To play games, your Chromebook and your PC must be on the same local network. It is best to connect the PC and Chromebook to the router with an Ethernet cable, but otherwise gaming via the 5GHz frequency is also a good option. You will then suffer minimal interference.

Once the connection has been made, you simply connect a Bluetooth controller or wired controller to your Chromebook, choose a game that is on your PC and start gaming immediately. You must of course have Steam on your computer for this, otherwise the above setup will not work.

Games in your browser

The internet is full of video games that you can play right in your browser. We are not talking about Flash games or anything like that. The Internet Archive gives you access to a wealth of websites with (outdated) information and programs, including video games.

For example, you can play a lot of old games in a browser tab. Do you need such old MS-DOS video games from yesteryear? You will also find that on the website. So if you need a series of classic games that you won’t find anywhere else, this is your new address.

Keep in mind that your experience may also be disappointing here. So you have to check per game whether everything is working properly. But if the game runs fine, then there is virtually nothing standing in the way of a nice game on a Chromebook.

Get games from the Google Play Store

Since the Chrome OS just runs Android applications, there’s no reason not to just take a look at the Google Play Store’s offerings. Google Play is full of interesting titles, not all of which are necessarily after your money or personal data.

You may still need to activate the Google Play Store for your Chromebook. You do this by clicking on the clock at the bottom right. Click on the gear icon, then find the Google Play option and activate the download store. This gives you access to the complete catalog.

If your Chromebook has a touchscreen, you can be sure that you will encounter virtually no problems. Most games are therefore just playable. Do you only have a keyboard and mouse or a controller, then you have to check yourself whether a game supports that input.

A number of games support keyboard and mouse, such as Asphalt 8, Vainglory and Baldur’s Gate. And then there are games that simply work with a controller, such as Oceanhorn and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. And if not, we have one last option for you.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

We already mentioned it: you can stream games to your Chromebook and you can play games on your Chromebook by downloading Android apps. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate combines both possibilities within one application, as it were. You do need a subscription for this.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a subscription that gives you access to over a hundred games. You can play those games on your Xbox, but also on your Android device or Chromebook. You can use an Xbox controller for this, or another controller you have at home.

You download the app from the Google Play Store, log in with your Microsoft account (or create one), take out a subscription (or use the subscription you already have) and you can immediately start streaming and gaming. New subscribers can try the service for little money.

So you see: gaming on a Chromebook is no problem either. You just need to know the options out there.
