Enable voice announcements on Mac? This is how!

Apple has cleverly built in special accessibility features to make it easier to use a Mac for disabled users. The voice material feature is designed to help users with a visual impairment.

The idea is that the Mac announces all incoming notifications so that the user is well aware of notifications. We can use this feature to our advantage and ensure that we do not miss important notifications.

Enable Voice Announcement on Mac

Click the Apple icon at the top left. Click System Preferences in the menu. Then click Accessibility.

Accessibility settings mac

On the left side of the menu, click on Spoken Material.

At the top you can select the System Voice for all voice commands. Click the Play button to hear the computer voice (Xander). You can adjust this voice by clicking “Adjust”. You may also be able to adjust the speaking speed.

Enable the following option: Speak announcements. You still have a number of additional voice commands that you can enable, namely, voice selection, voice prompt parts, and voice feedback during typing.

Click the Options button to change the voice commands. You have additional options here to further modify the specific voice command. Each of the voice commands above has different specific options. The options for pronouncing alerts are the voice, the sentence to be uttered, and any delay that needs to be applied before the notification is uttered.
