WannaCry / WCry / WannaCrypt ransomware also affects computers running Windows 7, like the posts under Windows 8, Windows Server and even old Windows XP. Despite having benefited from hundreds of updates since its release, Windows 7 is not foolproof and the most common Windows must also be patched to avoid getting infected with ransomware, some kind of virus that locks computer files.
As with other versions of Microsoft’s operating system, it is recommended that you turn on Windows 7 Automatic Updates to automatically receive the latest fixes. This goes through Windows Update or through a WSUS server in the company.
This procedure only concerns Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Released in March 2011, SP1 should already be installed on all machines running Windows 7. The others have not been maintained by Microsoft for a while.

Protect Windows 7 Against WannaCry
Download the anti-WCry patch
Go to this page: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4012212
Download one of these two packages, depending on the architecture of the operating system:
- Windows 7 in 64 bits : Qualitative Security Only Update for Windows 7 for x64-Based Systems (KB4012212) – March 2017
- Windows 7 in 32 bits / x86 : Qualitative Security Only Update for Windows 7 (KB4012212) – March 2017
This is only the patch to correct the flaw used by the WannaCry ransomware virus but which does not exclude Windows Update from checking for the latest system updates.
Download Update Pack for Windows 7
For the past few months, Microsoft has been offering update packs that accumulate the fixes released from the start. No need to install 150 updates since this “rollup” already includes all the packages. It also avoids installing an update which is then replaced by another, more recent KB or which fixes another problem of the same component.
As of the WannaCry virus, the May 2017 patch is the most recent available (KB4019264).
Go to this page: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4019264
- Windows 7 x64 / 64bits : 2017-05 Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4019264)
- Windows 7 x86 / 32bits : 2017-05 Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4019264)
Or go through the Windows Update utility.
