Do Chromebooks have HDMI ports? Of course, that depends entirely on the model you get. In general, you cannot simply say that a Chromebook is by definition equipped with an HDMI port on the side, but fortunately that does not mean the end of the world.
Chromebooks are handy guys
Let’s not be fussy: the Chromebook is a great alternative to an expensive laptop. You can often work productively on it, provided your work can of course be performed on the device. If you just use word processors and the like, you will often be able to work with it.
Chromebooks are handy guys. Although they can offer a lot for relatively little money, it is also true that you have to take into account that they cannot do certain things. So you don’t have to expect that you can install heavy computer programs on it, like on Windows.
What is possible is connecting an external display. There are several ways to do this, but the most accessible is through Chromebook’s HDMI port(s). To do that, you need at least three things. Don’t have an HDMI port? Then there shouldn’t be a problem.
Connect display via HDMI
To an external screen To connect via HDMI, you need three things:
- A Chromebook with an HDMI port
- An external display
- An HDMI cable (sometimes included with that display)
If your Chromebook doesn’t have an HDMI port, then there’s no man overboard. Then you can still use the above setup. You then need a special adapter: USB-to-HDMI. That cable ensures that you can still connect a screen.
With an external display you can work much more productively, since it is much easier to run several programs side by side. You can see so much better what you are doing. You can also read information and see emails coming in, while typing something in the meantime.
Chromebooks HDMI port
Although it is unfortunately not easy to say that literally every Chromebook has an HDMI port, we can say that the majority of Chromebooks have received such a port. Usually that port is on the left side of your Chromebook, on the side inside the housing of the base.
Connecting an external monitor is also very simple. You plug the HDMI cable into the Chromebook and into the external display. Then turn on the Chromebook (if you haven’t already), turn on the screen and check the correct settings just to be sure.
Why the HDMI port?
You may have noticed that Chromebooks, and other smart devices, sometimes still have older ports for connecting a display. It’s becoming less common, but we’re talking about DisplayPort, DVI and the VGA port.
So why is the HDMI port so important? The HDMI cable has really proven itself in recent years. Computers, laptops, game consoles, televisions and sometimes tablets all have the same ports and work with the same cables. It is similar to USB in that sense.
While USB is mostly used for data transfer and charging of products, HDMI (the letters stand for High Definition Multimedia Interface) is used for multimedia playback. In many cases it does not matter what the source or the display is.
Of course, there must be a certain compatibility. As in: if the screen, for example, does not support Full HD (an image resolution of 1,080 by 1,920 pixels), but the source does, then that image cannot be displayed in the quality you would like.
So you have to make sure that – in this case – both the source and the output support the same things. And then we are talking about the resolution, as indicated earlier, but also about terms such as HDR (high dynamic range), image refreshment (Hertz) and other technologies.
Chromebooks HDMI Ports: Which One Should You Choose?
Today, most modern Chromebooks are equipped with an HDMI port. Unfortunately, you can’t count on it completely. So if you are shopping online at an online store, it is a good idea to check the specifications.
Once you’ve selected a Chromebook based on your preferences, you can press the Ctrl + F key combination in the window where you shop. A small search field will now appear on the screen. In it, type HDMI and press Enter. Now you will see almost immediately whether the Chromebook supports HDMI.
Did you know that you can also use those USB ports to connect a mouse and keyboard?
