The Chromecast is a relatively simple device but offers many possibilities. But what about the connections exactly? Which one do you really need? In this article I will discuss things like Chromecast USB, but also which USB connection exactly, and we will also discuss the HDMI of the Chromecast.
Chromecast over USB? The Chromecast cannot stream through a USB connection. This is only used to power the Chromecast and not to start a stream. So you really need an HDMI for this, which you connect to your TV or other screen.
On a Chromecast you will find two connections: a USB connection and HDMI. Below we discuss both connections in turn. But let’s start with the most pressing question first.

Chromecast USB: Streaming via USB?
The USB connection to a Chromecast is purely and solely intended as a power supply. This means that you cannot stream via the Chromecast USB.
To get a picture on your TV, you need an HDMI, where the USB connection is used to power the Chromecast.
This power supply can be done in two ways and depends on the model you use. If you have the regular Chromecast, you can do this via the USB of the TV itself. Do you have a Chromecast Ultra or Chromecast with Google TV, then you need to connect it to the mains (so with a plug in the socket).
This means in any case that you must have a device with a free HDMI port to be able to use a Chromecast. This can be a TV, but also, for example, a screen from a computer or laptop.
💡Every Chromecast comes with the appropriate USB cable to power the Chromecast. There is also a plug in the box to use the Chromecast in the socket.
Which USB connection is on a Chromecast?
Every Chromecast has USB, but which one differs per model. Where previously micro USB was the standard, it is now slowly moving to USB-C.
The regular Chromecast (3) has a micro USB connection and the same applies to the Chromecast Ultra. The Chromecast with Google TV is equipped with USB-C.
A plug is always included in the box of the Chromecast, which you can use in a socket on the other side of the USB cable. For the Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV you will therefore always have a free socket nearby, this is not possible via the USB of the TV.
Below I have again listed all the information in a table.
|Chromecast||Chromecast with Google TV||Chromecast Ultra|
|Type of USB connection||Micro USB||USB-C||Micro USB|
|TV’s USB power supply||Yes||new||new|
Chromecast HDMI: what do I need?
As you know by now, a Chromecast also has an HDMI connection. In principle, this works with all HDMI connections on, for example, a TV or other device.
To make a Chromecast work, you always need a free HDMI port, otherwise it simply cannot be used.
Chromecast USB FAQ
The Chromecast doesn’t have that many connectivity options, but it’s good to know how they work exactly. Therefore, below are some frequently asked questions about the USB of the Chromecast.
Can Chromecast work over USB?
The short answer to this is: no, a Chromecast cannot play over USB. Depending on the model, the power supply can be provided via a USB port, for example on the TV or a monitor.
Which USB connection does the Chromecast have?
That depends on the model: the regular Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra are equipped with micro USB. The Chromecast with Google TV has a USB-C connection to power the device.
