Chromecast malfunction: help, my Chromecast is not working

A Chromecast malfunction is very annoying. Not just because the hardware or connection will not work; because anything could be going on. In this article, we look at the possible causes and present some solutions to common problems.

A Chromecast is a fantastic device. Within minutes you can turn a monitor or slightly older television into a modern device that is able to receive media from a smartphone, tablet or laptop. But if there are problems, then it is looking for a solution.

Chromecast malfunction: simple solutions

There are many reasons why there could be a Chromecast outage. We’ll start with the simpler solutions, after which we’ll dig a little deeper into possible other problems and solutions.

1. Restart the Chromecast

When you encounter a Chromecast malfunction, the first advice is always: restart it. You can do this very simply by pulling the plug from the socket (or the USB connection from the TV). Wait thirty seconds and plug in the mains plug.

2. Check your internet connection and wifi

Another, simple problem relates to the Internet connection. Perhaps the Chromecast interference is caused by the loss of the signal. Even now it is best to restart the device and then see whether the connection is fully or partially restored.

If the wireless WiFi signal partially returns, check whether you have a good connection elsewhere in the house. Connect the Chromecast to another monitor or television. And if you do have a good internet connection, the signal will not reach the Chromecast in the old place.

You can then buy an HDMI extension cable to solve the problem. Suddenly changing your entire living room is a bit of an exaggeration (unless you already planned this). Perhaps moving the Chromecast will help just enough for a stable Wi-Fi connection.

We have more solutions later in the article, but your problem may already be listed here.

Chromecast outage: the other devices

By the way, make sure that the smartphone or PC with which you want to cast content is connected to the same network as the Chromecast. Check whether the WiFi is turned on and whether it has a connection. Do you have multiple networks at home? Then that might be where the problem comes from.

The problem does not necessarily have to be with the Chromecast. Sometimes it also helps to restart the smartphone, tablet or computer when you run into problems and the above options do not help you. Usually the disturbance disappears like snow in the sun.

If that doesn’t help either, check whether all devices (the smartphone, television, computer and the Chromecast) are equipped with the latest software. When you cast from the Chrome browser, click on the three dots on the right and check if an update is available.

On Windows, proceed as follows:

Open the computer’s settings.

Go to Update & Security.

Select this option at the bottom right of the screen.

Check under Windows Update if an update is available

That is immediately apparent.

To do this, press the update button.

Chromecast malfunction: back to factory settings

The Chromecast updates itself automatically, so we don’t have to worry about that. If things still don’t work after the above actions, return the Chromecast to factory settings. You can do this very easily by following the steps below.

It can hardly be simpler. Set up as follows.

Also, always make sure you have the most recent version of the Google Home app. It is available for Android and iOS.

As you can see, there can be many problems that cause a Chromecast malfunction. If the connection still does not work after all the above solutions, then there may be something wrong with the hardware. It is then best to include content with the seller or Google.
