Changing the computer name on Windows – le crab info

The name of the computer is – as its name suggests – the name assigned to your computer in order to identify it on a local network. It is common to all computer users.

Is your computer name too classic or impersonal? If it’s the default, that’s pretty normal. To find it in a local network, it is not necessarily the easiest. It is quite possible to customize this name, to change the name of the computer on Windows 11 and Windows 10.

We will show you how to change computer name on Windows 11 and Windows 10 from Settings, Control Panel, System Properties, Command Prompt, and PowerShell. All with administrator rights.

Change the computer name on Windows

via Settings

Settings contain a lot of information including your computer name and the ability to edit it. This is the only method that differs slightly on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Let’s start with Windows 10 :

  1. Open them Settings > System.
  2. Click on About in the left menu.
  3. Click on Rename this PC.
  4. Enter a name and click Following.

    i Note: only letters, numbers and the hyphen (without spaces) are accepted. If the name is not valid, you will be notified.

  5. Click on Restart now.

Then on Windows 11 :

  1. Open them Settings.
  2. Click on System, in the left menu.
  3. Scroll down and click System information.
  4. Click on Rename this PC.
  5. Enter a name and click Following.

    i Note: only letters, numbers and the hyphen (without spaces) are accepted. If the name is not valid, you will be notified.

  6. Click on Restart now.

Congratulation : you have successfully changed the name of your computer using Windows Settings! 👍

via Control Panel

Now let’s go to the Control Panel to change the name of your Windows PC:

  1. Open the Control panel > System and security.
  2. Click on System Or on Display the name of this computer.

    i Note: you will notice that this method opens the same window as the previous method.

  3. Click on Rename this PC.
  4. Enter a name and click Following.
  5. Click on Restart now.

Congratulation : you have personalized the name of your Windows computer using the Control Panel! 👍

via System Properties

Accessing System Properties will also allow you to change the name of your PC:

  1. Open them System properties with the Run command : systempropertiescomputername.
  2. Stay in the tab Computer name.
  3. Click on To modify.
  4. Enter a new name in the field Computer name and validate with OK.
  5. Restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Congratulation : you have successfully edited the name of your Windows computer via the System Properties window! 👍

via command prompt

You can change the name of your Windows computer through the command prompt:

  1. Open the command prompt as administrator.
  2. Enter precisely this command by replacing NewName with the new name of your computer:
    wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" call rename name="NouveauNom"

  3. Press the key Entrance.

    i Information: if ReturnValue is not 0, the command failed. Verify that the name is valid and that the Command Prompt is open in administrator mode.

  4. Restart the computer for the change to take effect.

via PowerShell

You can also edit your device name with PowerShell:

  1. Open PowerShell as administrator.
  2. Enter precisely this command by replacing NewName with the new name of your computer:
    Rename-Computer -NewName "NouveauNom"

  3. Press the key Entrance.
  4. Restart the computer for the change to take effect.
