Chromecast 4 and Chromecast with Google TV
Let’s look at the naming first, there are quite a few different options. This is how this device becomes the Chromecast with Google TV named. But also Chromecast 4 is a commonly used term. For the people who are more into abbreviations, it is called the CMGTV (or in English GCWGTV).
To make it even more complicated: also the name Chromecast Sabrina happens more often. This was an internal code name at Google for this product. This all means the same product. In this article we use the names interchangeably.
We know the Google Chromecast as a simple dongle for the television, which makes many screens without internet options smart. With the device, you simply cast content from a smart device to the Chromecast and control the media via a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Basically, the regular Chromecast is a simple device. That also applies to the Google Chromecast 4. But you do get a lot of functions that users of other Chromecasts do not have. So what exactly makes the difference? Well, Google TV and the remote.

Chromecast with Google TV: what can you do with it?
Here are the details…
The Chromecast 4 is actually more media player than a simple dongle. The device is therefore comparable to the Nvidia Shield, which runs on Android TV, or the Apple TV, which runs on tvOS. That’s not just due to the fact that there’s now a remote control, which essentially makes media control via a source device superfluous. This is also due to the aforementioned Google TV.
The remote has buttons for menu navigation, content playback and direct shortcuts to Netflix and YouTube. There is of course also a button for the Google Assistant. The remote is also compact and very handy.
However, remember that the basics remain. The Google Chromecast 4 is also a Chromecast to which you can send content from a smartphone, tablet or PC. Apart from that, the design is also slightly different from other Chromecasts, so that it is more in line with Nest products.
The Chromecast with Google TV has a number of cool features. Then think about:
- A USB-C port
- Support for 4K
- Support for HDR (and Dolby Vision)
- Support for Dolby Atmos (and 5.1 speaker setups)
This Chromecast also provides a functionality. Because – unlike the Ultra – this time there is no Ethernet port for wired internet. You can purchase that addition separately if you really miss it. But otherwise you just connect it via the WiFi network, of course.
Under the hood, the Chromecast has a 1.9 Ghz Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A55 and a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU. In addition, there is 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. In principle, this storage is not intended for streaming, the Chromecast 4 is completely designed to work online.
The handy thing about this USB-C connection is that you can also connect a USB-C hub to it, allowing you to further expand the functionality. You can find out more about this in this video, for example.
There is also Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n/ac @ 2.4/5 GHz present on this Chromecast with Google TV and offers the possibility to connect via HDMI to the TV. The power is supplied via the USB-C port on the device, which must be connected to the mains.
Chromecast with remote control
This model is the only remote-controlled Chromecast on the market today. You can actually operate all functions with this relatively small remote.
For example, it is possible to directly Netflix or YouTube and you can easily access the Google Assistant. This Chromecast with remote also has the ability to turn the TV on and off (provided the HDMI port supports this), a function that I often use myself.
The Chromecast with remote is the only model with this capability. The Chromecast with Google TV thus has additional features and greatly simplifies operation when navigating through menus and installing apps.
Chromecast 4 with Google TV: the software
Another important difference compared to the earlier Chromecast versions is that Google TV is present on it. This is a unique software environment based on Android TV. That is the operating system for smart televisions and media players, which you will find here and there.
Google TV therefore relies heavily on Android TV, but works slightly differently than you are used to. You can still access the Google Play Store, where you can download all the apps you need. So basically nothing changes in usage. But the Google TV interface does add something.
That interface brings all (major) video streaming services together and you can stream content from, for example, Netflix, Prime, Disney Plus, Videoland, Ziggo or KPN iTV. This way you can quickly save a suggestion from the home screen of the Chromecast with Google TV and search all apps and services for the content you want to watch. You also immediately start a show, which then opens in the correct app.
Google TV is all about delivering the right content at the right time. The extra layer can also suggest more series and movies based on your viewing behavior, regardless of the app you use. All data is also synced with your Google account.
Of course you still have the option to open apps and scroll through the range of series, films, documentaries, music and other content. The fact that the Chromecast with Google TV has this interface definitely adds value.
Chromecast 4: Netherlands and Belgium
You can (and can’t) do this with it
Despite the fact that the Chromecast with Google TV have not been officially released in the Netherlands, you can purchase them through all kinds of web shops. Don’t worry, because that does not mean that you use the device in a foreign language. You can simply set the language to Dutch or English.
Because the media player has not yet been released in the Netherlands and Belgium, you may encounter limitations. Some apps may not work well with the Google TV interface because support is not officially built in. This may cause problems with certain apps for watching TV.
Personally, I’ve been using the Chromecast 4 for quite some time and haven’t found any really hindering issues. So if you are planning to purchase a copy, you can do so in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Chromecast with Google TV: even more possibilities
It is good to know that you can also use a service such as Google Stadia in combination with the Chromecast with Google TV. You do need a suitable controller for this. Basically any bluetooth controller will work, but the Google Stadia controller is probably just the best option. Stadia is Google’s cloud gaming service that lets you stream high-end games from the cloud to your Chromecast!
The big question now is: is Chromecast with Google TV a must-have? If you want to have the best Chromecast experience, this is a good option. Google TV is a clean and quiet interface, which does offer added value through recommendations and suggestions on your viewing behavior, spread over multiple apps.
If you are not looking for that and if you prefer to keep it all a bit simpler, an older Chromecast model is still very suitable. Moreover, not everyone has TVs and speakers that offer things like Dolby Atmos / Vision, so that cheaper options are often still the better options.
All Chromecast Compared
Which one should you choose?
There are currently two Chromecasts on the market that are widely available: the Chromecast (V3) and the Chromecast 4 (or Chromecast with Google TV). The Chromecast Ultra has now almost been phased out and is scarcely available, which is why I have left it out of the equation.
As you can see, there are quite a few differences and similarities between the two Chromecasts. To make the choice a little easier, below are a few statements
- Want to stream in 4K: choose the Chromecast with Google TV
- If you want to operate with an interface and remote control: choose the Chromecast with Google TV
- If you just want to stream in full HD: choose the Chromecast V3
- If you don’t want to spend too much: choose the Chromecast V3
If you want to be ready for the future, the Chromecast 4 with Google TV is the best option. If you don’t want to spend too much, it’s better to go for the regular Chromecast.
In my article about buying Chromecast I go deeper into this topic, so if you want to know more about it or if the choice has not yet been made, you can go there.
Chromecast 4 with Google TV: Finally
For ~ € 80 you can buy a very extensive streaming dongle that is well put together. In addition, Google will provide the necessary interesting updates in the coming years to further expand the functionality.
Who knows, the Chromecast 4 may be your new gaming device of the future. Hopefully you were able to make up your mind and found the best deal!
