iPhone 13 review
The iPhone 13 is a more refined version of the already well-performing iPhone 12. It’s nice that you get more storage for the same entry-level price. The improved cameras and battery life are also nice plus points. The design is characteristic of Apple and a bit more playful due to the new colors and the modified camera module.
The screen leaves mixed feelings, because in terms of colors, clarity and sharpness there is nothing to complain about. Refreshing at only 60 times per second is really not done in 2021 and that notch … that is really not (anymore) Apple’s either.
If you have an iPhone 11 or older and you want something new, the iPhone 13 is simply the device to wait for. The iPhone 12 is admittedly more available, but costs only a few tens less.

Price of the iPhone 13
The new iPhone is just as expensive as the iPhone 12 was after launch. Yet the device is practically cheaper. How about that? That’s because Apple has doubled the standard storage capacity from 64GB to 128GB. More storage, for the same price. This allows you to store more photos, movies and music offline. In summary, these are the iPhone 13 prices:
The most important iPhone 13 specs at a glance
The new 2021 iPhone combines the past with the present. The design, for example, is clearly inspired by that of its predecessor, but if you look closely, you will discover several fine improvements.
2020 Was a gap year for the iPhone camera. The iPhone 12 (and mini) has largely the same camera setup as its predecessor. The 12 Pro (Max) did get a LiDAR depth scanner, but you take photos just like with the iPhone 11 Pro with the triple lens on the back.
Fortunately, Apple will be bigger in 2021. The camera in the iPhone 13 has also been improved. For example, the device has improved image stabilization. The phone does this by borrowing a feature, sensor shift, from the iPhone 12 Pro Max. As a result, the lens physically moves during shooting, so that everything looks much sharper (and especially less moved).
The iPhone 13 has two cameras on the back, just like its predecessor. However, the lenses are placed differently: diagonally instead of vertically. The ultra-wide angle lens has also been improved, as have the software options. For example, thanks to the addition of Cinematic Mode you can make cinema-worthy videos (Dolby Vision) with your iPhone. The phone does this by automatically shifting focus, just like in movies.
Also new: Smart HDR 4. The software recognizes up to four people in a photo and adjusts the contrast, exposure and skin tones for each person individually. You can also go wild with ‘Photographic Styles’. These are smart filters that you apply to photos, leaving specific areas (such as skin tones) untouched.
2. More screen, less notch
The iPhone has looked about the same for years. The design of the current phones is largely based on the design of the iPhone X from 2017. This phone caused a revolution at the time by omitting the physical buttons on the front. The iPhone X also introduced the notch. This screen notch at the top is necessary for the front camera and Face ID sensors (for facial recognition).
Such a notch was very innovative at the time, but in 2021 a bit old-fashioned. Now the notch is still there, but Apple has made it narrower. According to Apple, the ‘bite’ in the new device has become 20 percent smaller. That looks a bit better, but we hope the notch on the iPhone 14 disappears completely.
The screen itself has also been tinkered with. The new iPhone has a higher maximum brightness than the iPhone 12. This is especially nice when you try to read the display in bright sunlight. The size has not changed. The 2021 iPhone still has a 6.1-inch screen.
2. Bigger Battery
The battery life of an iPhone has never been so good, as with the iPhone 13. Apple has considerably stretched the battery capacity, so that the battery lasts an average of 2.5 hours longer than with the iPhone 12, according to Apple. new A15 Bionic chip, which is more energy efficient than the previous iPhone chip.
4. Design of the iPhone 13
Apple made little changes to the iPhone 13 design. The new iPhone is like two drops of water on its predecessor. So the device has an angular design with a metal frame and a screen that seems to lie flat on the housing. Speaking of that display, it is again protected with a very strong layer of Ceramic Shield. As a result, the display does not break so quickly.
The biggest design change is the colors. If you buy the iPhone 13, you can choose from five colors: blue, midnight (black), starlight (silver), red and pink.
5. Hardware and storage
Hello more storage! Finally, Apple is scrapping the 64GB storage capacity. If you buy the iPhone 13, you will receive at least 128GB of storage. At an additional cost, you can expand this capacity to 256 or 512GB.
Such an amount is especially recommended for people who download a lot of movies and/or music. Even if you work a lot with photography/videography, it is smart to buy some more storage. If you regularly make videos in 4K quality, 128GB of storage is so full.
Also new: the A15 Bionic. That makes the iPhone 13 the most powerful smartphone you can buy at the moment. Like the A14 Bionic chip, it has two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. The Neural Engine has been improved and performs 15.8 trillion calculations per second. There is also an improved image signal processor and the chip is more energy efficient than its predecessor.
6. 5G and MagSafe
The iPhone 13 supports 5G – just like last year’s iPhone 12. Unfortunately, the device can still only handle the lower 5G frequencies: Sub-6 GHz. Earlier there were rumors that the iPhone 13 would support the fastest version of 5G: mmWave. So this is not the case. Only the devices in the United States are equipped with mmWave 5G.
Also present again: MagSafe. This wireless technology was first introduced with the iPhone 12. The iPhone has a magnet on the inside, so that you can easily click MagSafe accessories into place. This can be a charger, but also a MagSafe wallet or car holder.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the iPhone 13
What is the price of the iPhone 13?
The device starts at 909 euros . You then get the entry-level model with 128GB storage. For 1029 euros you get the version with 256GB storage. The largest version, with 512GB of capacity, costs 1259 euros. What colors will the iPhone 13 come in?
The 2021 iPhone comes in five versions: Pink, Blue, Midnight (black), Starlight (white) and Red. The device is therefore slightly less colorful than the iPhone 12, which appeared in six colors. What are the specs of the iPhone 13?
Like its predecessor, the device has a 6.1-inch OLED screen with industrial design. However, the notch, the snack at the top of the screen, has become smaller. According to Apple, the notch has shrunk about 20 percent compared to the iPhone 12.
Under the hood, the iPhone 13 has a new A15 Bionic chip. This is logically faster than the previous chip (A14) and above all more energy efficient. This has increased the battery life by about 2.5 hours. Also great: the standard storage capacity has been doubled. The iPhone 13 therefore starts at 128GB of capacity, instead of 64GB.
The 2021 Apple smartphone has a dual camera on the back, just like its predecessor. The lenses have been slightly improved. For example, they absorb more light in dark situations.
Furthermore, Apple has tinkered with the software and, for example, added Cinematic Mode. This function can shift focus while filming, just like you sometimes see in cinema films. Of course, the iPhone 13 has 5G.

What kind of camera does the iPhone 13 have?
The device has a total of three cameras: two on the back, and one on the front. We’ll start with that last one. The iPhone 13 has a 12-megapixel selfie camera that can film in 4K quality, among other things.
There are two sensors on the back (both 12 megapixels), just like the iPhone 12. However, the lenses are placed differently: diagonally instead of vertically. Furthermore, the cameras are better able to shoot well-exposed shots in the dark.
Also, Apple has given all iPhone 13 phones a previously exclusive feature of the iPhone 12 Pro Max: sensor shift. This gives the device better image stabilization. During shooting, the lens physically moves with it, so that everything looks much sharper and less moved.

Does the iPhone 13 have Touch ID?
New. For a long time it was rumored that this would be the case, but not so. The iPhone 13 does not have Touch ID (fingerprint scanner), but it does have Face ID. So you can unlock the device by looking into the front camera. When he recognizes you, the screen will unlock.Does the iPhone 13 have a notch?
Yes, but it has gotten smaller. According to Apple, the notch of the iPhone 13 is about twenty percent smaller compared to the iPhone 12. That is of course good news, because you have relatively more screen space at your disposal. What is the release date of the iPhone 13 in the Netherlands?
The device can be pre-ordered from September 17 and actually for sale from September 24. Please note, because the delivery times add up quickly. So you may have to wait a few weeks/months for your order.

Yes, of course. In fact, you can use a total of three phone numbers on your iPhone 13. That’s because the device supports dual esim (an electronic SIM card). After all, there is still room for an ‘old-fashioned’ physical SIM card.
In order to enjoy all this, your provider must of course support it. In the Netherlands, KPN, Simyo, Vodafone and T-Mobile, among others, offer esims.
