No new iPad Pro appeared in 2019, but that changed in the first half of 2020. With a press release, Apple presented the new Pro, which looks the same as its predecessor but makes a lot of important improvements. The tablet is again available in 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, with different options for internal memory. Apple’s iPad Pro 2020 prices are as follows:

The most important new features and improvements at a glance

The iPad Pro 2020 may look familiar, but the device is still making a lot of changes behind the screen. We have listed the most important ones for you below.

Dual camera lens

Like the iPhone 11, Apple wants to give the Pro iPad a high-quality camera. In addition to the regular 12 megapixel camera, an ultra-wide angle lens has been added, which makes it easier to capture large areas. This is also useful for ARKit and other augmented reality platforms that allow you to place virtual furniture in your living room, for example.

First Apple product with LiDAR scanner

The iPad Pro 2020 has the honor of being the first Apple product equipped with a LiDAR scanner. LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging, which allows the iPad to measure the distance between the iPad and an object. The scanner does this by measuring how long it takes for light to hit an object and bounce back to the iPad.

With a distance of up to five meters, this makes new things possible for augmented reality. This allows the iPad to accurately map a room or garden down to the smallest detail. This is valuable information for AR apps, which can better place virtual objects in the real world as a result. Augmented reality is becoming increasingly important to Apple and the iPad Pro shows why.

Supports the new Magic Keyboard

At the same time as the iPad Pro 2020, Apple unveiled the Magic Keyboard: the first iPad keyboard with a built-in trackpad. That means a huge change for the iPad, which supports trackpads from iPadOS 13.4. The new keyboard has a backlit keyboard, built-in USB-C connection and you can click it magnetically to the iPad Pro, after which the keyboard is automatically linked.

You can use the trackpad about the same as on a MacBook. This way you can easily select text or move images. Older iPads that run on iPadOS 13.4 or newer will also support trackpads. The new Magic Keyboard can also be used by the iPad Pro 2018.

Runs on the new A13X processor

The iPad Pro 2020 runs on a brand new processor designed by Apple: the A12Z processor. This is a derivative version of the chips in the iPhone and previous iPads, with special adjustments to make them work extra well on the tablet. That makes the 2020 Pro faster than most laptops, according to Apple. The chip works closely with the 8-core graphics processor to smoothly put the latest apps and games on your screen.

Same design with USB-C connection and Face ID

In terms of design, you do not have to make the switch from the iPad Pro 2018 to this new version. Apple has kept the same design, including the Face ID camera, the screen that fills the front and the USB-C connection instead of a Lightning port. In addition, the tablet again supports the second generation of the Apple Pencil, which you can magnetically click on the side so that it is also charged.

Succeeded by the iPad Pro 2021

In May 2021, Apple released its new iPad Pro 2021. This tablet again comes with a few nice improvements compared to this model. Think of a much improved screen and the introduction of the M1 chip. According to Apple, the new iPad is about 50% faster than this one. However, that’s not the only thing. With the iPad Pro 2021, Apple is really taking a big step forward.
