We’ve been watching a lot of series and movies this year, so we can tell you: this is the best of 2021.

Read more after the ad.

The Android Planet streaming awards: best series and movies of 2021

Although we sometimes could not get to the cinema due to lockdowns, we were also entertained at home with the various streaming services last year. We’ll put the best of 2021 in a row for you.

We only choose from the range of streaming services that allow you to use a Chromecast, as in our weekly streaming tips. In addition, we focus on series and films that have been made exclusively for the services, or have appeared almost immediately with the cinema release on the service.

You probably do not agree with our list and that’s fine. For inspiration in the comments, let us know what you enjoyed the most this year.

Best New Series: Squid Game (Netflix)

This was a difficult category, because there were just too many good new series coming out in 2021. Still, we enjoyed Squid Game the most. This series has kept the minds busy and it’s not for nothing.

Squid Game is about people with huge debts who can win a huge amount of money by playing life-threatening versions of innocent children’s games. The series is surprising, shocking and you are sitting on the edge of your seat until the end.

Best new series of runner-ups

  • Only Murders in the Building (Disney Plus)
  • WandaVision (Disney Plus)
  • Lupine (Netflix)
  • Maid (Netflix)

Best New Season: Sex Education Season 3 (Netflix)

Due to corona, we had to wait a little longer for the third season of Sex Education, but it was worth it. This series is about a school where the students have an above-average interest in sex. Students are getting a new principal this season that introduces new rules, such as a uniform for everyone.

That sounds silly, but is exactly what this series needs: a twist to tell new stories. Sex Education is the best series ever made. You often do not see such quality and originality anymore.

Best new season runner-ups

  • You Season 3 (Netflix)
  • What We Do in the Shadows season 3 (Disney Plus)
  • La Casa de Papel Season 6 (Netflix)
  • The Boys Season 2 (Prime Video)

Best Movie: The Green Knight (Prime Video)

This year, Netflix did its best to finally offer good exclusive movies, but we were still most impressed with The Green Knight. The artistic film that gives a new twist to the legend of King Arthur was not made entirely exclusively for Amazon, but was seen almost simultaneously with the cinema release via the streaming service. Although the film will not appeal to everyone, we still hope that it gives everyone a chance. Especially when you’re done with so many superhero movies.

Best movie runner-ups

  • Passing (Netflix)
  • The Power of the Dog (Netflix)
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Disney Plus)
  • The East (Prime Video)

Best Reality Series: Clarkson’s Farm (Prime Video)

You probably know Jeremy Clarkson from programs like Top Gear or The Grand Tour. This somewhat clumsy guy has decided to turn his land into a farm. That’s harder than he thought.

Now you’re probably expecting the same nonsense from his car shows, but Clarkson’s Farm turns out to be much more sincere. Each episode has a new purpose for Clarkson on his farm, such as sheep or a farm shop. Of course, everything is missed, but also surprisingly much good.

Best Special: Bo Burnham – Inside (Netflix)

The last few years have been difficult for comedians because they could not perform. Intelligence comedian Bo Burnham has therefore recorded a special for Netflix from his home. With a unique combination of comedy, fun songs, pure despair and a lot of recognizability, this special will linger for a very long time. At the runner-ups you will find not only comedy, but also other specials that are worth your time.

  • Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles (Disney Plus)
  • The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown (Prime Video)
  • Life in a Day (YouTube)
  • Nicole Byer: BBW (Big Beautiful Weirdo)

Best Documentary: The Beatles: Get Back (Disney Plus)

A lot of new movie material from The Beatles has been found. Filmmaker Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) is stuck there to make a special documentary. Here you can see, among other things, how the most famous songs of the band originate. The cameras come so close that in the end it feels like you were there yourself.

Best documentary runner-ups

  • Welcome to Earth (Disney Plus)
  • NikkieTutorials: Layers of Me (YouTube)
  • Power On: The Story of Xbox (YouTube)
  • Dat Ene Woord: Feyenoord (Disney Plus)

Best Animation: Luca (Disney Plus)

For animation lovers, 2021 was a year of ironclad series and movies in which we were constantly surprised. The hardness of the superhero series Invincible, how small changes have big consequences in What If…? and how the League of Legend series Arcane is much better than we ever thought.

However, this year the prize goes to Pixar for Luca. A wonderful film about a fisherman who tries to live with humans and there are his true selves. A recognizable story for anyone who hides their true nature from fear of the people around them. But also just a wonderful adventure film in Italy.

  • What If…? (Disney Plus)
  • The Mitchells vs. The Machines (Netflix)

The best from the Netherlands: 100 Days in Your Head (NPO)

In terms of Dutch series and films, 2021 was the best year to date. Think of the impressive war film The Battle of the Shield on Netflix, which tells an important story from our history. Or the third season of Mocro Maffia, which continues to go strong.

But this year we were most impressed by 100 Days in Your Head, in which Tim den Besten and Nicolaas Veul walk a hundred days on a psychiatric ward. Impressive, instructive and very beautiful.

New streaming services in 2022

In 2022, it will be even more difficult to keep track of everything, because then we will only get more streaming services. The most important are HBO Max, SkyShowtime and Viaplay.

With HBO Max you get exclusive top series from HBO and series made especially for HBO Max. SkyShowtime combines the content of US services Peacock and Paramount Plus, including a wealth of Star Trek content. Viaplay is becoming a must for sports fans. On Android Planet, we’ll also give you weekly streaming tips in 2022, so you do not miss the best things.
