The 5 best mid-range smartphones of 2021

High-end smartphones are becoming more and more expensive, but fortunately mid-range devices are also getting better. Between 250 and 500 euros you will find a lot of phones with fast hardware, a good battery life and excellent cameras. This year, the bar for affordable phones is a bit higher again. Here are our top five mid-range smartphones of 2021.

OnePlus Nord 2

The OnePlus Nord 2 builds on the first Nord, with which OnePlus was very successful in the midrange market. The new version is a better smartphone in almost every way. The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor is very fast and we know the 50 megapixel main camera from the much more expensive OnePlus 9. You get excellent shots with that, even though the wide-angle lens is a lot less good.

More and more mid-range smartphones are charging very fast. The OnePlus Nord 2 is no exception, as the box contains a 65 Watt charger, which fills the device completely within half an hour. That, of course, is a fine luxury. The 6.43-inch oil screen looks unchanged from its predecessor and shows beautiful images.

That’s fine, because it’s a nice display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. Where the first Nord had a dual selfie camera, the new version has only one. As a result, the hole in the screen is much smaller.

Check the price comparator below if you want to buy the OnePlus Nord 2. You can also purchase the device in combination with a subscription.

2. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

With the Galaxy S20 FE, Samsung is targeting people who want a flagship for a slightly lower amount. Yes, it’s made of plastic, but that’s one of the few disadvantages of this device.

You get a still very fast Snapdragon 865 chip, a water-resistant housing, smooth 120Hz screen and solid cameras. The battery life is also fine. We were therefore very enthusiastic about this smartphone in our review of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE.

A year ago, we could not have counted this phone among the midrangers. The 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE cost 749 euros during the release. Now you can buy it for less than 500 euros and that’s a great deal. There is also a 4G version of the device, but it is hardly cheaper. We therefore recommend that you go for the 5G model, as it is a bit more future-proof.

3. Poco F3

In our review of the Poco F3 we came across superlatives. For only 349 euros you got a quasi-flagship with a large and smooth screen, 5G support and extremely fast Snapdragon 870 chip. In the meantime, the price has dropped even further and you can take the Poco F3 home for just over 300 euros. This makes it not only one of the best, but also one of the most affordable mid-range smartphones you can buy in 2021.

Granted, the cameras are not the strongest point of this phone. However, they are fine if you only occasionally take a look at social media. In addition, the sleekly designed device has a lot to offer on almost every other level. You can easily get through the day with the battery and Poco’s update policy is also in order for this price range.

4. Xiaomi 11T

Every year, Xiaomi releases a whole mountain of smartphones, which often look quite similar. Instead of the Xiaomi 11T, we could have included the Xiaomi Mi 11i in this overview, for example. Our choice for the 11T is mainly based on two points.

This device charges the 5000 mAh battery in just 36 minutes with the included 67 Watt adapter. In addition, you get three major updates to Android 12, 13 and 14, plus four years of security patches. That is longer than previous models from this manufacturer.

In our review of the Xiaomi 11T, you can read more about the other pluses of this device. The 6.67-inch screen looks very good and we still know the fast MediaTek Dimensity 1200 from the OnePlus Nord 2. In terms of camera, the Xiaomi 11T does it a little less well than the OnePlus.

In our price comparison you will find the best deals for a single Xiaomi 11T. Of course, you can also get the device in combination with a subscription.

5. Motorola Moto G100

The Motorola Moto G100 is also one of the best mid-range smartphones of 2021. Thanks to the fast Snapdragon 870 chip, it is the most powerful phone Motorola has ever made. Tastes differ, but we also find it the most beautiful. The back is matte finished and has a nice color scheme. Unlike cheaper Motorolas, the G100 therefore radiates luxury.

The Moto G100’s 6.7-inch screen has a resolution of 2500 by 1080 pixels. This means that it is an elongated screen with an aspect ratio of 21 by 9. The smartphone is therefore comfortable in the hand, even though it is difficult to operate with one hand. The pixels refresh 90 times per second for a smooth image, but unfortunately it is an LCD display. The other phones in this comparison have an OLED screen, which provides better colors and higher contrast.
